Peter Zimmermann from Germany said he and his wife have been coming to Vietnam for 5-6 months every winter since 2013 and they always rented a house or a large apartment in the beach town of Nha Trang. "Vietnam is really an excellent place to live as a retiree as local people are open and very friendly. There are good hotels, resorts, restaurants, cafes and apartments. Great beaches by the sea and lots of culture and history to discover," he told VnExpress International . However, current visa policies remain a major barrier for pensioners looking to settle down in Vietnam because the country has not resumed its pre-pandemic visa policies. Apart from granting visa exemption to 24 tourism markets for stays of 15-30 days, Vietnam only issues a one-month single-entry e-visa to visitors from other countries, instead of the three-month multi-entry visas it used to issue. "It is not reasonable for pensioners like us to leave the country every 30 days and return with a new … [Read more...] about Vietnam visa policy rebuffs foreign retirees’ love

Earning its stripes: tech bid to crack tiger trade
In a town in northeastern Scotland, Debbie Banks looks for clues to track down criminals as she clicks through a database of tiger skins. There are thousands of photographs, including of rugs, carcasses and taxidermy specimens. Banks, the crime campaign leader for the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a London-based charity, tries to identify individual big cats from their stripes. Once a tiger is identified, an investigator can pinpoint where it comes from. "A tiger's stripes are as unique as human fingerprints," Banks told AFP . "We can use the images to cross-reference against images of captive tigers that might have been farmed." Currently this is slow painstaking work. This photograph taken on April 10, 2019 shows Vietnamese Border Patrol officials holding a confiscated tiger skin and bones while the suspect Pham Van Hiep (2nd R) looks on at a Border Guard station in northern Vietnam's Quang Ninh province. Vietnam’s short-term visa is driving tourists away
"Retirees in Europe and America are starting to make plans to escape the cold winter at home. Until the corona pandemic, Vietnam was the destination for my wife and I for seven years. We have found many friends here who we would like to see again. But short-term visas for 30 days are of no use to us. We tried that in March and then after 30 days had to fly from Nha Trang to Kuala Lumpur to return with a new e-visa. Vietnam received $25 for the new visa and Malaysia about $800 for flights and hotel. Since there is still no indication that Vietnam will reintroduce three-month visas, we now plan to go to Thailand instead. There you can get visas for 3, 6 and 12 months. For this you have to submit bank statements to prove that you have sufficient funds. If that's what's required, we'll do it. No problem. So it is entirely up to the Vietnamese government whether our money ends up in Vietnam or goes to other countries. We cannot understand why the government is having such a hard time … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s short-term visa is driving tourists away
