Securities association expresses concern over prospect of 1,000 shares minimum trading lot

March 4, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – A 1,000 minimum trading lot will limit the participation of small investors, while the stock market is moving towards fairness and equality.

The Vietnam Association of Securities Businesses (VASB) has expressed concern over a proposal of the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HOSE) in raising the minimum trading lot to 1,000 shares to ease the overload issue.

“The way out for such issue is to upgrade HOSE’s trading system, and the state authorities should speed up the process as soon as possible,” VASB’s Vice Chairman Phan Quoc Huynh told tinnhanhchungkhoan.vn .

According to Huynh, a 1,000 minimum trading lot would limit the participation of small investors, while the stock market is moving towards fairness and equality.

Huynh referred to opinions from some securities firms as saying that the move would cause negative impacts on Vietnam’s stock market.

Meanwhile, a higher minimum trading lot may cause a sharp decline in the trading volume for stocks of firms with large market capitalization in the context of unchanged stock value, said Huynh.

“With expensive stocks, investors may have to spend hundreds of million dong to buy the minimum 1,000 shares,” he said.

Chairman of SSI Securities Corporation Nguyen Duy Hung on his social account gave a more positive view on HOSE’s proposal, saying the trading system would be on the brink of collapse without appropriate measure.

“Raising the minimum trading lot to 1,000 shares is necessary at the moment to keep the system running,” he said, adding when the system upgrading process is completed, the minimum trading lot could be reverted to 10.

Hung said the overload of orders that forces the stock exchange to halt market trading is the result of a rapid-growing stock market that outpace the processing capacity of the stock market, as such, “a long-term solution is a must,” he suggested.

Newly-appointed General Director of HOSE Le Hai Tra previously said more developed markets such as Japan, Taiwan or Singapore had all risen the minimum trading lot.

He estimated a 1,000 minimum trading lot could reduce 40-50% of the total transaction volume, while taking the liquidity to a new level.

In another move, the State Securities Commission of Vietnam (SSC), the country’s stock market watchdog, has instructed the Hanoi Stock Exchange (HNX) to process transactions of stocks from the HOSE as another solution to ease the latter’s overload issue.

However, an option to move to the HNX would not apply for stocks under the VN30 Index, comprising 30 largest stocks on the HOSE.

The new change was set to take effect from March 3, 2021 until further instruction from the SSC.

Both before and after the Tet holiday, the overload occurred repeatedly on HOSE whenever liquidity in a trading session hit around VND14-17 trillion (US$608-738 million).

The SSC attributed the overload issue on the HOSE to the transaction processing capacity of the stock exchange that limits the number of transactions per day, while a recent surge of orders has exceeded the expectation of the market.

Gold prices fluctuate, traders make huge profits

March 4, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

The gold price in the world market has decreased by 13 percent this year, causing Vietnamese to lose billions of dollars. Meanwhile, the domestic price has stayed high.

Gold prices fluctuate, traders make huge profits

The gold price in the Asian market is closer to $1,700/ounce after falling from the $1,800/ounce threshold last week.

On March 2, the world price fell to $1,718/ounce, or VND48.7 million per tael, not including tax and fees, or VND7.5 million per tael lower than the domestic price.

“The gold price in the world market has been decreasing rapidly, $100/ounce just within one week and $250 so far this year, or 13 percent,” said Do Huu Thanh, an investor in Hanoi, adding that it was not foreseeable.

According to Thanh, the gold price drop did not affect his assets, because the domestic gold price remains high, over VND56 million per tael. Thanh doesn’t intend to sell gold at this moment.

A finance expert estimated that total gold reserves are worth up to $20 billion. With the 13 percent decrease in the last two months, Vietnamese have lost $2.5 billion.

In the world market, investment funds rushed to sell gold as the US dollar recovered and the US bond yield increased. Investors believe that the recovery of the US economy will come sooner than initially planned.

The price of the precious metal fell also because the cash flow is heading for stock market, which has picked up with the news about the Covid-19 vaccine.

While the world price fluctuates heavily, the domestic price remains at VND8 million per tael higher than the world market. The domestic market is quiet with few transactions because of low demand.

Analysts said businesses have still set gold prices at high levels because the domestic market is not highly communicative with the world market and the gold import/export is still carried out based on the quota granted by management agencies. The gold imports are controlled in an effort to prevent foreign currency bleeding.

According to Huynh Minh Tuan from Mirae Asset, demand for gold is weak, while cash keeps flowing into the stock market, VND15-20 trillion each session.

Gold and real estate remain favorite investment channels because investors lack high confidence in the domestic currency. Moreover, the prospect for gold is bright in the international market in the long term. The gold price does not heavily depend on demand. As businesses keep selling prices at high levels, they can make big profits.

Experts believe that gold will still be a good investment channel in the long term because the inflation rate is predicted to increase.

HCM City theatre group preserves tuong

March 4, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

One of Ho Chi Minh City’s private theatres is working to introduce young people to tuong or hat boi (classical drama), a Vietnamese traditional theatre genre that originated in the 17th century.

The Huynh Long Tuong Troupe will stage a series of new historical plays featuring national heroes and events in different periods under the Tran, Ngo, Dinh and Ly dynasties this year.

The first show, Ngô Quyền Và Chiến Thắng Bạch Đằng Giang (General Ngo Quyen and the Great Victory on Bach Dang River), will be released on HCM City Television in March.

The play features the battle of Bach Dang River in 938, when the Vietnamese troops led by General Ngo Quyen defeated the invading forces from the Chinese Southern Han Dynasty.

The General at the time had his troops plant iron-tipped wooden stakes into the river bed, invisible during high tides. After he launched a counter-attack at low tide, the enemy’s large boats ran aground as they were pierced by the long sharpened stakes.

The victory of Bach Dang ended the 1,000-year Chinese domination of Vietnam, opening a period of Vietnam’s independence and sovereignty. Ngo Quyen became the King and ruled the Ngo Dynasty.

The play features young talents My Chau, Dang Khoa and Quoc Thanh, graduates of the HCM City University of Theatre & Cinematography.

“We will offer quality shows featuring a unique style of tuong,” said the troupe’s art director and actress Binh Tinh, who has 20 years of experience in the industry.

“We want to bring the art closer to young audiences.”

The Huynh Long Troupe, which opened in 2017, is composed of 30 skilled actors, mostly graduates of leading art schools in the city and neighbouring provinces. The troupe offers performances every Sunday at 144 Dinh Tien Hoang Street in Binh Thanh District.

Managed by actress Binh Tinh and her staff, the troupe offers shows aimed at young people.

“Our veteran artists help young talents improve their vocal and performance skills in the hopes that they’ll develop a professional career and the troupe will become a place for people to enjoy the art in a unique way,” she said.

Tuong star

Born to a traditional family in HCM City, Binh Tinh, whose real name is Huynh Ngoc Trinh, began her love for tuong when she was a child. Her first lessons came from her mother, famous actress, scriptwriter and director Bach Mai, owner of the Huynh Long Troupe.

In 2016, Binh Tinh won first prize at the Chuông Vàng Vọng Cổ (Golden Bell) Awards, a national cai luong (reformed opera) contest presented annually by HCM City Television.

She took part in Sao Nối Ngôi (Young Stars), a TV programme featuring young actors in cai luong, on Vinh Long Television’s THLV1 channel in 2018.  She and her colleagues performed vong co (nostalgic tunes), cai luong and tuong.

She has played leading roles in famous historical plays, such as Thái Hậu Dương Vân Nga (Queen Duong Van Nga) and Huyền Trân Công Chúa (Princess Huyen Tran).

Through her art, these plays have been renewed. “I’ve always worked hard to develop the art and maintain my family’s artistic tradition,” said Binh Tinh.

She and her staff at Huynh Long Tuong Troupe have co-operated with traditional art troupes and television stations in the city and southern provinces to produce and perform in shows and programmes featuring tuong.

“We have worked hard to make each show a lesson, with images, sounds and music, that provides young audiences with wonderful insights about their history, traditional culture and theatre,” said the 40-year-old.

Tuong consists of singing and dancing accompanied by music, and is highly stylised and filled with symbolism. Its themes include monarchist loyalty and patriotism which help define the play’s structure, language, music, struggles, and characters’ personalities.

Performers wear heavy costumes weighing up to 10 kilos. They use their body, from the fingers to the elbows to all of the muscles, to move on stage. They must have a strong voice to sing and dance at the same time, and express the emotions of the characters. VNS
