Dioxin cleanup underway at US-built airport in central Vietnam

Situated in A Luoi District, 100 km from the town of Hue, the country’s imperial capital, the airport was built by the U.S. in the 1960s. Between August 1965 and December 1970 A Luoi District was among the places where the U.S. sprayed Agent Orange most intensively. From 1961 to 1971 the U.S. army made 19,905 sorties and sprayed 80 million liters of deadly chemicals over farmlands and forests in Vietnam. Of this, 61 percent, or 366 kilograms, was Agent Orange, a highly toxic defoliant that stays in the soil and at the bottom of lakes and rivers for generations. According to government data, around 11kg of dioxin was sprayed on A So airport. It is estimated that the chemical has percolated 0.7 m into the soil and a total of 35,000 cubic meters of land at the airport is contaminated. In 2020 the Chemical Command received approval for work to remove dioxin from the airport until 2022 at a cost of VND70 billion ($3 million). Vietnam wins four medals at 34th International Olympiad in Informatics

(Photo: SGGP) With a 100 percent medal-winning rate, including one gold and three silver medals, the Vietnamese national team ranks in the top nine countries and territories, after China, Japan, the US, South Korea, Iran, Ukraine, Croatia, and Taiwan, according to the medal tally. Specifically, Tran Xuan Bach, an eleventh grader of the High School for Gifted Students, College of Natural Science, under the Vietnam National University (VNU), won the gold medal. Duong Minh Khoi, a twelfth grader of the High School for Gifted Students, College of Natural Science; Le Huu Nghia, a twelfth grader of Binh Long High School for Gifted Students in Binh Phuoc Province; Truong Van Quoc Bao, a twelfth grader of Phan Boi Chau High School for Gifted Students in Nghe An Province, won the silver medals. First Vietnamese victim in Manchester fire identified through fingerprint

(Photo: VNA) London (VNA) - Partial human remains recovered from Bismark House Mill in the UK have been identified, through fingerprint analysis, as Nguyen Van Uoc, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK, citing an announcement on August 12 by Greater Manchester Police (GMP). Uoc was one of four Vietnamese nationals who were reported missing to the police earlier and may have been inside the mill during a fire on May 7, 2022. The three others are Chu Van Cuong, Nguyen Van Duong, and Le Thanh Nam. Police are waiting for more DNA test results to identify further victims. The 31-year-old maintained regular contact with his wife until the date of the fire, at which time he said he was in a mill. Teams have been searching the remnants of the mill since demolition workers discovered human remains on Saturday, July 23, 2022. Concern of Vietnamese guest workers in RoK cleared up

(Photo: VNA) Seoul (VNA) – Vietnamese labourers who are working in the Republic of Korea (RoK) within the Employment Permit System ( EPS ) programme raised questions relating to their rights, interests and obligations at a meeting on August 14. This is the first in-person legal consultation for the Vietnamese employees after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It brought together Vietnamese workers from Gyeonggi province’s Ansan city and its neighbouring localities.
