Vietnam, Japan look to foster trade cooperation A workshop was held in Tokyo on October 22 to discuss measures to promote economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Japan. Held by the Department of Trade Promotion (DTP) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Japan-ASEAN centre, the event attracted representatives from more than 100 Japanese and 25 Vietnamese enterprises operating in handicrafts, mechanics, plastic, home furniture and gifts. Speaking at the workshop, Doan Thi Thu Thuy, Deputy General Director of the DTP said Vietnamese goods are present in most markets around the world, and exports are shifting from raw materials to products with higher value such as electronics and smart phones. Bac Ninh industrial parks play significant role in local economy Industrial parks of the northern province of Bac Ninh have made up 70 percent of industrial production value, over 90 percent of exports and 51.7 percent of budget collection of the locality. The figures were given at a conference on August 24 to review 20 years of forming and developing local industrial parks. According to Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Tu Quynh, the introduction of the Management Board of Bac Ninh Industrial Parks 20 years ago is a breakthrough step showing the vision and mindset of provincial leaders in mobilising resources, investment to boost industry’s growth. Donald Trump dangled the carrot of foreign investment in front of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at their nuclear summit, but analysts say few will want to put money into one of the highest-risk business environments in the world. The U.S. president showed Kim a movie of bright lights, high-speed trains and soaring tower blocks - pitching a future that could be possible if Pyongyang gives up its weapons. Optimists say that with mineral wealth, cheap labour, and a helpful geographical location, the North has huge potential. But the history of overseas firms who have tried to set up operations in the isolated, impoverished country is a long and sorry one.
