On September 2, 100 pairs of brides and grooms, wearing traditional dresses as well as radiant smiles on their faces, celebrated their weddings together. Before the ceremony took place in a restaurant, the couples visited the statue of Ho Chi Minh at the Children's Cultural House. The mass wedding has become a regular part of National Day celebrations in Ho Chi Minh City. The group wedding is held for couples with limited financial income and difficult living conditions. The happy couples held bouquets of lotus flowers as they lined up to get married, offically. Duy Nhat, 36, places a kiss on the cheek of his similing bride, Van Anh, 24. “Life as a worker is hard, I keep working overtime, but the salary is just enough to make ends meet. We have been dating for three years but we did not think of getting married. Now that I see my wife wear make-up and be a beautiful bride, I am so happy,” said the emotional groom. US committed to invest in Việt Nam’s success, ambassador says
Viet Nam News On the occasion of the 242nd anniversary of US Independence, US Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink reviews a journey of his nation. The fourth of July reminds us of the journey our nation has undertaken to build a “more perfect union”. Our Founding Fathers gave us a compass to guide this journey. On the fourth of July 1776, they declared all people were created equal, with unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We have travelled far since then. Generations of Americans have struggled and sacrificed to protect these rights. Today, it is our role and responsibility to carry their vision forward. I think it’s important to remember, even 242 years after July 4, 1776, we have a long way to go and are still learning and progressing on that journey. But, we remain committed to progress. To recognize these journeys and this progress, the US Embassy celebrated our Independence Day by recognising a great American icon, Route 66, a symbol … [Read more...] about US committed to invest in Việt Nam’s success, ambassador says
A royal lesson for Vietnamese women
Amidst the oohs and aahs over the recent Royal wedding in Britain and the “controversy” over Meghan Markle’s already-married-once status, a sobering thought struck me. Even today, as many as 35 percent of Vietnamese women believe that husbands have the right to beat their wives, according to a United Nations report. It was not long ago that a woman I care a lot for asked me if a foreign boyfriend would beat his girlfriend. I laughed at the question and said: “It’s the 21st century, no progressive man would ever lay a hand on women.” She sighed: “I wish all Vietnamese men can think like that.” Her husband would beat her up every time he got drunk, and sometimes this happened several times a week. She was desperate but did not know what to do. I asked her if she’d called the police, and she said she’d already done that, more than once, but the response was always the same. No police officer showed up. The typical advice was … [Read more...] about A royal lesson for Vietnamese women
