Vietjet CEO is welcomed by many passengers at the airport. New-age carrier Vietjet’s president &CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao late January 30 arrived at Tan Son Nhat International Airport to check the airline’s operations in the days before the Lunar New Year. Accompanying Thao were two vice presidents To Viet Thang and Nguyen Duc Thinh. The check-up was carried out after Dinh Viet Thang, Director of Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), did the same thing at the airport and wished Vietjet staff and employees a happy new lunar year. A Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321 carrying Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and government officials made the first touchdown at the Van Don International Airport near the world-famous Ha Long Bay on Sunday morning, marking the opening of the first private airport in Vietnam. Construction of the airport, 50 kilometers away from Ha Long Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh, began in 2015. The 325-hectare (803 acres) airport, owned by real estate giant Sun Group, costs VND7.7 trillion ($330 million) and can handle 2.5 million passengers a year equivalent to 1,250 passengers per hour. Its parking bay will have place for at least four aircraft by 2020 and seven by 2030. It is expected to focus on services to Northeast Asian destinations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and mainland China and Southeast Asian ones like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Cambodia. According to the airport’s management board, the construction of the terminal, air traffic control tower and operation tower of the VND7.5 trillion (US$330 million) airport was already completed. Other construction was 95 per cent finished and was on track for the airport to be put into official operation as scheduled on December 25. The management board also said that along with speeding up construction, it was doing the market search for flights to ensure the operation efficiency of the first privately-invested airport in Viet Nam. If the Danang People’s Committee’s proposal to build the third terminal, Danang International Airport may be able to with the risk of overload. By 2020 both terminals at Danang International Airport are expected to be overloaded On November 1, the Danang People’s Committee submitted a document to the Ministry of Transport requesting it to approve Dang International Airport’s planning outline built by Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, and simultaneously arrange capital to build the third terminal for the airport. According to the plan, the airport will welcome 13 million passengers and handle 50,000 tonnes of cargo by 2020, and these figure increased by 28 million and 200,000 tonnes by 2030. The MoT proposed assigning ACV to carry out key tasks at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport project In the document sent to the prime minister on capital mobilisation and the schedule of developing Tan Son Nhat International Airport project, the Ministry of Transport (MoT) said that if the project called for private investment, it would take nearly two years to carry out the procurement procedures to select investors. Accordingly, it is very difficult to improve the capacity of the airport to 50 million passengers by 2022, as the airport is already overloaded.
