Hong Kong leader refuses to explain journalist visa denial
Hong Kong's leader Tuesday refused to say why the city had denied a visa to a leading Financial Times journalist, despite escalating demands for an explanation of the unprecedented challenge to freedom of the press. Victor Mallet, a Financial Times journalist and vice president of the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Hong Kong, was given seven days to leave Hong Kong. (AFP/Paul Yeung) Victor Mallet, the FT's Asia news editor and a British national, angered authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong by hosting a speech at the city's press club by Andy Chan, the leader of a tiny pro-independence political party, in August. All the warning signals related to Barijat were cancelled early Thursday, but officials warned of a much greater threat from Mangkhut. According to the observatory, Mangkhut is forecast to move towards the Philippine island of Luzon on Friday and Saturday. Around 10 million people in the Philippines are in the storm's path, and millions more in heavily populated coastal China. Philippine authorities have started to evacuate thousands of people from coastal areas as winds bore down … [Read more...] about Hong Kong braces itself for Super Typhoon Mangkhut, the strongest tropical storm in decades
