On 17, February 2006, at Sheraton Hotel in Chiang Mai City, Thailand the 5th Aisa - Pacific Information and Communication Technology Awards (APICTA) Contest opened officially. The purpose of these annual Awards is to review. The quality and results of I.T (Information Technology) products in the area the World; the APICTA language is English. The participating countries are: Vietnam, Singapore, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Thailand, Macao, Malaysia, Australia, Brunei and China with 164 contesting products. The APICTA was initiated and organized by Mr. Dato Mahathir Mohammad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia for the first time in 2001 and 2002 in Malaysia, then in 2003 in Thailand, 2004 in Hong Kong; the Contest will held in turn by the participating countries. US rejects rice because of pesticide residues Vietnam may lose its foothold in the US if it can't address the overuse of pesticides by farmers. Vo Thanh Do, deputy head of Department of Processing and Trade for Agro, Forestry and Fisheries Products and Salt Production, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said they had to issue a warning on September 30 about the situation as 95 containers of rice shipments weighing 1,700 tonnes, have been returned in the first four months of 2016 because of pesticide residues. Firms that have shipments returned repeatedly will be banned from exporting to the US. Pham Thai Binh, director of export company Trung An, said, "Companies that are compromising rice quality are endangering Vietnam's reputation in the US and the world. If this can't be fixed, Vietnam may lose markets and be banned from exporting." According to Binh, both farmers and firms should take the blame. CIEM: Drastic reforms key to growth Vietnam must take bold measures to boost reforms and ensure all businesses can compete fairly if it is to return to its high growth path and catch up with regional countries, said the president of the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM). Nguyen Dinh Cung told a conference in Hanoi on Wednesday that Vietnam has little scope for more growth after 30 years of economic reform, so the country would have to work harder to achieve higher growth. He said a comprehensive policy for building up a competitive business environment is essential for the next phase of reform. According to the Government's Resolution 19, CIEM is tasked with drafting and submitting the policy next year. Cung said the policy would be ready on time. A CIEM report showed Vietnam's economic growth has steadily cooled, from an average of 7.8% in the 1990-2007 period to 6.7% in 2007-2012, and just 5.8% from 2012 till now. Nawaplastic still hungry for Binh Minh Plastic shares Owning a dominant stake in Binh Minh Plastic (BMP) did not quench Nawaplastic Industry Co., Ltd. (Nawaplastic)’s thirst for BMP shares. Most recently, Nawaplastic registered to buy an additional 1.17 million BMP shares to increase its holding to 44.525 million shares, equalling 54.39 per cent of the charter capital. The transaction is expected to occur between June18 and July16. The registered share volume is the remaining part of the 2.86 million shares that Nawaplastic failed to buy during previous transactions. Notably, Nawaplastic registered to buy 2.86 million BMP shares during transactions on May 14-June 12, however, the Thai investor ended up buying 1.69 million of the registered shares as BMP did not match Nawaplastic’s target price. Danang unveils plan to develop e-city project Danang City has just approved a plan to develop the e-city model in the central coast city, targeting to become a modern e-city by 2020. Under Decision 10401 issued on Monday, the city’s Government is determined to apply information technology (IT) in all fields. The project will be implemented in two phases with six main tasks, including an e-city model and an overall legal frame for such tasks, IT application models among enterprises and the community, and IT infrastructure improvement among others. In the first phase from 2012 to 2015, Danang will set up foundations for IT infrastructure and human resources development. For the second phase that follows up to 2020, the city will finish the connection among models of e-government and social and economic agencies and organizations with the contribution of IT as the spearhead economic sector.
