Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs has set up a special committee to review existing laws, especially those related to national security, Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said. Muhyiddin said the committee, which was established last week, is chaired by the ministry’s Secretary-General Datuk Seri Alwi Ibrahim. The committee will review the laws that come under the Ministry of Home Affairs such as the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (SOSMA), the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2015 (POTA) and the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 (POCA). On May 22, Muhyiddin was reported as saying that the Ministry of Home Affairs would review seven laws related to national security that were found to be no longer suitable today. The laws are the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, the Sedition Act 1948, mandatory death sentence, the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, POCA, SOSMA and POTA. Hi-tech terror threat warned at ASEAN-Australia Special Summit

(Photo: AAP) Sydney (VNA) – Australian Home Affair Minister Peter Dutton on March 17 named use of encrypted messaging apps to plot terrorist attacks the greatest threat faced by intelligence agencies in modern times in his remarks at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit that is underway in Sydney. The use of the “dark web” by extremists and other criminals is increasing, Dutton noted, adding that they are using encrypted messaging apps to avoid detection by police and intelligence agencies. He stressed that the only way to tackle the threat and the increasing use of the Internet by terrorist groups like Islamic State to radicalize and recruit new members was together. It would be a mistake to approach the problem from a national perspective as terrorism and violent extremism transcend national borders, the minister said.
