Ho Chi Minh City ‘sidewalk captain’ Doan Ngoc Hai leaves job at state-owned company
Ho Chi Minh City’s ‘Captain Sidewalk’, Doan Ngoc Hai, has officially been relieved of his position at a local construction corporation, six months after handing in a letter of resignation. An official from state-run Saigon Construction Corporation (SGCC) confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Thursday that the company had officially dismissed Doan Ngoc Hai, a previous vice-chairman of the city’s District 1 administration. The municipal People’s Committee named Hai as SGCC’s deputy general director on June 4, but just hours after the appointment he presented officials with a letter of resignation declaring that he lacked the appropriate qualifications needed for the job and that the role would be in opposition to his “personal aspirations.” On September 5, the city’s administration announced its decision to relieve Hai from the deputy general director role, but asked that he remain an employee at SGCC. 7,000 registered for charity run in Ho Chi Minh City
More than 7,000 participants have registered for a charity run held in conjunction with the annual Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper-sponsored Sunflower Festival in Ho Chi Minh City. The Sunflower Festival is hosted each year by Tuoi Tre and the Vietnam Youth Federation to raise awareness and support for pediatric cancer patients in order to commemorate Le Thanh Thuy, a high school student who became famous after losing her battle against bone cancer on November 2, 2007. It also promotes the efforts of the 'Thuy’s Dream Foundation' – a charitable organization set up by Tuoi Tre to support children with cancer. This year’s Sunflower Festival, the 12th edition of the event, is themed 'For the Sunflower Warriors' and will feature events and activities in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hue. Doan Ngoc Hai, known for his signature ‘sidewalk clearing’ campaign in Ho Chi Minh City in 2017, has been assigned a new job at a state-run corporation, albeit against his personal aspirations. Hai, former deputy chairman of District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, received a decision on his transfer from city leaders at a ceremony on Tuesday. He now serves as deputy general director of the Saigon Construction Corporation (SGCC), which is owned by the administration of Ho Chi Minh City. Founded in 1996, SGCC is tasked with developing and providing consultancy on residential and infrastructure projects. Police arrested a man on Sunday for slashing four members of his brother’s family to death and severely injuring another with a chopper because of a land dispute. The suspect, 53-year-old Nguyen Van Dong, and his brother 50-year-old Nguyen Van Hai had a dispute over a piece of land their parents had left them on Hong Ha Commune, Dan Phuong District, Hanoi, Nguyen Thac Hung, deputy chairman of Dan Phuong, said on Sunday afternoon. Dong carried a chopper knife to Hai’s place at 7:30 am on Sunday after the younger brother turned the first sod on his new house built on the piece of land. The elder brother slashed Hai and the latter’s daughter, 28-year-old Nguyen Thi Bac, to death on the spot out of utmost rage.
