Policies targeting youth malnutrition would save 230,000 children in Vietnam annually: UNICEF
Including examinations of and treatment for severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in children in a revision of Vietnam’s Law on Medical Examination and Treatment would save the lives of 230,000 children each year, according to Rana Flowers, UNICEF representative in Vietnam. In a press release on Wednesday, UNICEF provided evidence of increasingly widespread malnutrition in children around the globe, including in Vietnam. Over 230,000 Vietnamese children under five years old suffer from SAM each year, according to a 2009 national nutrition survey. The most visible and lethal type of malnutrition is wasting and severe wasting – conditions where an individual weighs far below what is healthy for their height, resulting in weakened immune systems and potentially ending in death, UNICEF warned. Globally, at least 13.6 million children under five years old suffer from severe wasting, causing one out of every five deaths in this age group, the agency said. Zalo becomes most popular app among children in Vietnam: Kaspersky
A report based on anonymized data voluntarily provided by parental control application Kaspersky Safe Kids users has highlighted Vietnamese instant messaging app Zalo as the most used platform by children in Vietnam in the first quarter of 2022. Once installed, Kaspersky Safe Kids collects search queries and web browsing activities on devices that children use to access the Internet in order to notify parents of content in “undesirable categories,” including adult media, alcohol, narcotics, tobacco, racism, and profanity. The multinational cybersecurity and anti-virus provider carried out a study using data from Kaspersky Safe Kids to better understand child preferences and interests. According to results of the study announced on Tuesday, the five most popular apps for children around the world include YouTube, which led the way with a rate of 31.6 percent, followed by TikTok at 19 percent. Orbis to assist over 60,000 Mekong Delta children with eye care next year
Orbis international organisation will support more than 60,000 children in the Mekong Delta region with eye check-ups and assist over 10,000 students with surgeries under a project slated for next year. Authorities of the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on May 19 received representatives of the organisation regarding the integration of an eye screening project into annual health examination for children in 2023. Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien spoke highly of Obis’ projects which help residents in the Mekong Delta access high-quality eye care services, asking the organisation to care more for rural children. He assigned relevant agencies to support and build specific plans for the launch of projects.
