China's Hainan, an island province dependent on tourism, locked down more areas on Monday, state media reported, as it battles its worst COVID-19 outbreak after seeing very few cases the past two years compared with many other regions in the country. The island in the East Vietnam Sea, which recorded just two local symptomatic COVID-19 cases last year, has reported more than 1,400 domestically transmitted infections this month, including 982 symptomatic ones. Although that is small by global standards, it is the province's biggest outbreak since the virus was first reported in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019. The sharp increase in cases comes amid a pick-up in interest in tourism after China slightly eased curbs aimed at domestic travel, accounting for the shorter incubation period of the Omicron variant, which facilitates a shorter quarantine time. However, the curbs in Hainan, in line with China's "dynamic COVID-zero" policy that aims to stamp out outbreaks as … [Read more...] about China’s Hainan expands COVID-19 lockdowns to quell outbreak

Two storms forecast to hit Vietnam this month
In August alone, the total rainfall in Vietnam's northern region would be 10-20% higher than in previous years. Vietnam could face two tropical depressions or storms in August, according to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting (NCHMF). NCHMF deputy director Hoang Phuc Lam said the center was monitoring the possibility of weather disturbances that could evolve into tropical depressions or storms in the East Sea over the next five to seven days. Lam noted that under the influence of the tropical depression, the northern part of Vietnam will experience strong winds and rough seas, while heavy rains and strong winds are likely to occur in the coastal areas in the next few days. “Storms and tropical depressions are likely to hit in the northern part of the East Sea this month and increase in frequency in the following months,” the deputy director said. Analysis: Global rice supplies at risk as harsh weather hits top exporters
SINGAPORE/MUMBAI -- Adverse weather across top rice suppliers in Asia, including the biggest exporter India, is threatening to reduce the output of the world's most important food staple and stoke food inflation that is already near record highs. Rice has bucked the trend of rising food prices amid bumper crops and large inventories at exporters over the past two years, even as COVID-19, supply disruptions and more recently the Russia-Ukraine conflict made other grains costlier. But inclement weather in exporting countries in Asia, which accounts for about 90% of the world's rice output, is likely to change the price trajectory, traders and analysts said. "There is an upside potential for rice prices with the possibility of production downgrades in key exporting countries," said Phin Ziebell, agribusiness economist at National Australia Bank. "An increase in rice prices would add to already major challenges for food affordability in parts of the developing world," Ziebell told … [Read more...] about Analysis: Global rice supplies at risk as harsh weather hits top exporters
