Thanh Hóa beat Bình Định in V.League 1

HÀ NỘI   The 1-0 victory over Bình Định club in the V.League 1 2021 on Saturday helped Thanh Hóa maintain an unbeaten streak through four consecutive matches, and helped their players in their pockets as well.

With this win, Thanh Hóa’s chairman Cao Tiến Đoan decided to award the team VNĐ1 billion (US$43,500).

“I am very happy so I continue to reward the team to motivate them,” said Đoan.

Previously, Thanh Hóa team received VNĐ3.2 billion ($139,100) from the chairman after their victory over Hồng Lĩnh Hà Tĩnh, Hải Phòng and a spectacular draw against HCM City.

Despite being the away team, Thanh Hóa played confidently from the opening whistle. They took the lead in the 43rd minute thanks to Lê Quốc Phương’s free kick.

The pressure of Thanh Hóa and the psychology of the previous loss clearly affected Bình Định who were poor in the midfield. On the day when the stars Hồ Tấn Tài, Hendrio da Silva and Rimario Gordon didn’t play well, Bình Định struggled to create many opportunities on Thanh Hóa’s goal.

“I am very happy, I hope my players continue to maintain their spirit of competition to raise rankings in the next matches,” said Serbian coach Ljupko Petrovic of Thanh Hóa.

On Bình Định’s side, coach Nguyễn Đức Thắng said he felt sad when his team lost two consecutive matches.

“The saddest thing was that the team couldn’t score. We will have a change on personnel next games to improve our result,” said Thắng.

In other matches, Hồng Lĩnh Hà Tĩnh defeated Sông Lam Nghệ An 2-0, and Sài Gòn tied goalless with Hải Phòng.   VNS

Declining business confidence due to COVID-19

April 18, 2021 by vov.vn

More than 87% of local businesses affected by COVID-19

According to the 2020 Provincial Competitiveness Index (PCI) survey, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a widespread negative impact on the operations of local enterprises. More than 87% of them, including domestic private and foreign-invested firms, have reported that their operations last year were heavily impacted by the global pandemic.

The proportion of businesses reporting the impact of the pandemic as “completely negative” stood at 15% for domestic private enterprises and 13% for FDI firms, respectively. Only 2% of businesses, of which less than 1% are FDI enterprises, rated COVID-19 as having a “positive” effect, while approximately 11% of each group said they have suffered no impact from the pandemic.

Dau Anh Tuan, director of PCI Project and head of the Legal Department under the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), says that the narrowed domestic market coupled with disrupted supply chains represent the largest difficulties facing local businesses.

“COVID-19 has greatly affected business operations of various sectors from garments and textiles, tourism to aviation, and transportation which all endured a decline in revenue compared to the previous year. 30% of businesses said they had to lay off their employees. This is a very high rate, severely affecting enterprises’ operations,” Tuan states.

This comes as the turnover of numerous local firms in 2020 came in significantly lower due to travel limitations of consumers as they tried to either protect their health or comply with social distancing measures. Due to this, roughly 66% of domestic private firms and nearly 62% of FDI enterprises reported a fall in revenue last year. On average, business revenue dropped by about one thirds in comparison to 2019’s figures, he adds.

Decline in business confidence

Business size over the next two years is forecast to decrease significantly in comparison to a figure of 51% recorded in 2019. This marks the third lowest level since 2006, when the PCI survey initially began on a national scale.

This figure is only higher than the bottom recorded in the 2012 to 2013 period when the Vietnamese economy faced the dual impact of the global financial crisis coupled with domestic macroeconomic instability.

“In the 2020 PCI survey, up to 13% of businesses plan to scale down their business operations or close down. This is the highest level in 15 years since the VCCI conducted PCI surveys in all provinces and cities nationwide,” the PCI Project director says.

Many local businesses have therefore devised solutions aimed at dealing with the pandemic as well as setting out long-term solutions, such as changing and diversifying supply sources to the market whilst boosting digital transformation.

Local authorities across all levels should therefore give priority to assisting businesses and citizens to overcome the negative impact of the pandemic in a fair and appropriate manner. In particular, it can be viewed as necessary to consider investing resources in retraining and providing skills for workers who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19.

This is due to many labourers currently looking for jobs in sectors capable of responding to the crisis in a more flexible way, the PCI Project director emphasizes.

Vietnam National Museum of Nature – ideal destination for nature lovers and researchers

April 18, 2021 by vov.vn

Located at No.18 Hoang Quoc Viet street in Hanoi, the Vietnam National Museum of Nature covers 300 square meters. On display are 1,400 items describing the life cycles of mammals, retiles, amphibians, insects, and plants which were present in Vietnam millions of years ago and recently discovered.

Opened in 2014, the museum is a great source of information on Vietnam’s flora and fauna. Nguyen Thi Ha of Tran Hung Dao high school in Hanoi said, “I’m learning a lot during my trip to the museum. I can see the diagrams and fossils with my own eyes. I’m really impressed by the specimens on display.”

The Vietnam National Museum of Nature takes visitors on trip back to ancient times, of which the species are categorized.

Visitor Nguyen Van Nam of Hanoi elaborated that “The exhibition is lively and thrilling. The exhibits demonstrate the knowledge that pupils learn at school so that they remember easily.”

The exhibition of the history of life features warm light and colors, very pleasing to the eyes. On display are fossils of the four geological development periods on Earth: the pre-Cambrian period (4,500 – 541 million years ago), the Mesozoic (541 – 252 million years ago), the Mesozoic (252 – 66 million years ago) and the Great Neoplasm (66 million years to present day).

The exhibition of animals features bone specimens of frogs, carp, king cobras, tigers, ostrichs, and pig-tailed monkeys, precise to the smallest details. The collection of insect exhibits at the Vietnam National Museum is the biggest of its kind in Vietnam, grouped into beetles, dragonflies, cicadas, mantis, and stick insects, some of them lived 400 million years ago.

Nguyen Thanh Tuan of Cau Giay Secondary School in Hanoi said, “I have never seen such butterflies in real life. They are incredibly colorful and totally different from what I can imagine. My visit to the museum today is really helping enrich my knowledge.”

The exhibition of marine creatures features corals, shellfish, amphibians, and reptiles that are extinct. A panel is erected at each exhibition providing a short description.

Visitors to the Vietnam National Museum of Nature can learn to create specimens, paint the animals, and watch 3D movies about the evolution of humans, fish, dinosaurs, and insects and how the universe and the ocean have changed.

Vu Van Lien, Vice Director of the Vietnam National Museum of Nature, said, “Visitors are introduced to the formation of life. Here we teach them about the nature and infuse their love for nature. Everyone is responsible for protecting the environment.”

Entrance to the Vietnam National Museum of Nature is free from Thursday to Sunday.

Disabled Vietnamese man speaks out against YouTube bullies

April 18, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

As some YouTube content creators in Vietnam leech off a disabled man’s private life for views, the video platform has failed to protect him and his loved ones against such cyberbullying.

Pham Huu Tho, 36, was born with limb defects and later acquired hearing loss that caused his career options to dwindle.

In 2017, he took his first shot at selling goods online – a job that Tho soon knew was most suited to him because it did not discriminate against his disabilities.

By 2018, Tho had already made enough to pay his bills thanks to the explosion of online shopping in Vietnam.

It was also through the Internet that Tho met his future girlfriend Pham Thanh Hoa in 2019, when she was a factory worker who ran a small online business as a side job.

Hoa would source her goods from Tho, and frequent chatting between them eventually led the couple to fall in love.

After introducing Hoa to his family in the southern beach city of Vung Tau, Tho decided to relocate to Hanoi with the girlfriend so they could move in together.

Their relationship was not one without hindrances: Tho’s family members vocally opposed them getting married out of fear Hoa was only using him for money.

They could not wrap their heads around how an able-bodied woman would want to spend the rest of her life with a disabled man.

Tho disagreed, maintaining that he was not any richer than Hoa for such an argument to make sense.

Things would have stayed an internal family feud had it not been for some dozen YouTube channels who saw the forbidden love as perfect material for click-baiting videos.

At first, Tho agreed to answer questions from some visitors who said they wanted to put his love story online.

Then, droves of other so-called content creators jumped on the bandwagon and digged deeper into Tho and Hoa’s private struggles to win approval from his family.

Each had their own take on the matter, including those attacking Tho for ‘disobeying’ his parents.

Slanders and insults were common among the thousands of comments posted under each video.

Whenever Tho spoke up about his desire for love, respect, and the ability to travel, he would be met with a barrage of online attacks for turning his back on his own family to pursue a lover.

Some YouTubers even came to his parents for interviews and published all of their ‘reveals’ on the online platform, without any regard for Tho and Hoa’s privacy.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, Tho mentioned the ‘respect’ he has received from his girlfirend.

“She talks a lot and shares with me many of her happy stories, and about everywhere she goes and anything she does,” Tho spoke of his girlfriend.

“I’m more than 35 years old, and I have every right to love and my own choice.”

Recently, some YouTube personalities even published videos in which they threatened to hire thugs to abduct Tho and bring him back to his parents’ house.

Tho and Hoa said they are now afraid to even step out of their house, fearing for their lives.

Tho said heartwarming support they receive from some netizens have been inconsequential compared to the amount of hate being unleashed upon the couple, which often reduces Hoa to tears.

“I only wish for a peaceful and normal life like others,” Tho said.

“What can YouTube and relevant authorities do for those like us?”

Would YouTube step in?

YouTube’s Community Guidelines prohibit content “promoting violence or hatred against individuals or groups” based on their intrinsic attributes, including a disability.

However, to what extent YouTube goes to curb content that violates this policy remains a question.

“YouTube does remind people that behind the target of every video or comment is a real person,” Xuan Minh writes for Tuoi Tre.

“Then why does it allow a multitude of channels to monetize by spreading hatred, and even ‘recommend’ similar videos with thousands of views?

“YouTube and its content creators make money off of views and advertisements, so the tolerance or even encouragement of content promoting hate speech targetting disabled members of society, Tho’s case being an example, goes to show that many parties are violating YouTube’s Community Guidelines and degrading others for profit.”

Vietnamese businesses look to further optimise opportunities from CPTPP

April 18, 2021 by dtinews.vn

After two years of implementing the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the use of the deal to generate benefits for the economy and businesses has remained modest, according to insiders.

Among 14 free trade agreements (FTAs) Vietnam has signed, the CPTPP is a new generation FTA with high standards and the highest level of facilitation. Vietnam has been forecast to be one of the members that benefits the most from the deal.

However, the country has experienced challenges in optimising the FTA because of its modest level of development and competitiveness. Due to US-China trade tensions and the impact of COVID-19, the global economy fell into crisis last year with interrupted supply chains. Vietnam also suffered an economic downturn. Therefore, after two years of implementation, the benefits from the CPTPP are still to be seen. Vu Tien Loc, President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), said that positive results in the two years of implementation include the reform of institutions and administrative procedures. Explaining the modest benefits so far, Loc said major reasons include the poor competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises, market instability, and the low capacity of State agencies. Meanwhile, Nguyen Cam Trang, Vice Director of the Import-Export Department at the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said the CPTPP has helped promote Vietnam’s exports. However, its market share and export growth to the six partners that have implemented the CPTPP have been low. She noted that Vietnam’s market share is 3.1 percent in Japan, 1.9 percent in Australia, 1.6 percent in New Zealand, 1.3 percent in Mexico, 1.1 percent in Canada, and 1 percent in Singapore. Growth in exports to CPTPP markets was 12.2 percent in 2018, 13 percent in 2019, and 12.02 percent in 2020, Trang added. She said that, in the future, State agencies should enhance their capacity to implement the CPTPP while continuing to complete legal policies, strengthen communications regarding the deal, support macro, small, and medium-sized enterprises to improve their capacity, encourage investment in material production, and design measures to reduce logistics costs. Businesses should also be more active in seeking opportunities from the deal, while changing their mindset and exploring demand in CPTPP markets to design suitable business strategies and plans, she added. A survey by VCCI showed that about three-quarters of businesses said they will adjust their business plans to optimise the opportunities from the CPTPP and other FTAs.
