Vietnam triumph in SEA Games 31 three-cushion carom
Tran Quyet Chien claims a SEA Games gold medal in three-cushion carom on May 22. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNS/VNA) — Tran Quyet Chien proved why he’s the world No. 3 in three-cushion carom after beating Nguyen Duc Anh Chien in an all-Vietnamese final of the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) on May 22. Despite being one of the best carom players, this is the first SEA Games gold medal for Quyet Chien as this category is rarely held at the SEA Games. The final got off to a very even start with both players closely following each other on every point. However, against one of the world’s best, Anh Chien couldn’t keep his momentum and missed a few tough shots when the match was getting more intense. And that Quyet Chien left his compatriot far behind as the 38-year-old showed his class, scoring consecutive points to take a big 31 -16 lead. Anh Chien’s massive late effort helped the world top 20 player to narrow the gap to 35-24 before Quyet Chien sealed … [Read more...] about Vietnam triumph in SEA Games 31 three-cushion carom
Vietnam subdue Thailand to strike gold for 2nd time in SEA Games men’s football
Vietnam beat their Thai rivals 1-0 on Sunday night to win the gold medal in men’s football for the second time in a row at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Despite the rainy weather, fans arrived at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi very early to cheer for the junior Golden Stars. The Vietnamese under-23 team staged a series of attacks to pressure their Thai peers in the very first minutes of the match. Striker Nguyen Tien Linh had a chance to open the scoring for Vietnam in the 19th minute, but his header was not powerful enough to defeat Thai goalie Kawin Thamsatchanan. From a corner kick in the 43rd minute, Thailand’s Jonathan Khemdee took a shot at Nguyen Van Toan’s goal, but the ball flew too high. Vietnam carried out a counterattack in the following minute, but there was a lack of coordination between the players. The first half concluded with no goals for either team. Thailand launched more attacks after the break, threatening Vietnam’s net in several … [Read more...] about Vietnam subdue Thailand to strike gold for 2nd time in SEA Games men’s football
Vietnam Airlines suffers $113mn Q1 loss despite revenue surge
National carrier Vietnam Airlines remained in the red in the first quarter of this year, with losses of nearly US$113 million, despite its revenue rising to a two-year high. The airline posted a loss of VND2.621 trillion ($112.9 million) over the first three months of 2022, according to its Q1 consolidated financial statements issued on Friday. The loss was recorded even though the flag carrier logged revenue of more than VND11.6 trillion ($500 million) in the period, up 55 percent year on year, the highest performance since the second quarter of 2020, when COVID-19 began to severely affect Vietnam’s aviation industry. The impressive revenue failed to cover the total cost that was higher than expected, leading to the firm’s ninth consecutive quarterly loss, the carrier said. Vietnam Airlines’ fuel expense in the quarter was VND465 billion ($20 million) more than projected given rising world oil prices, VnExpress cited the company as saying. The Q1 result has brought the … [Read more...] about Vietnam Airlines suffers $113mn Q1 loss despite revenue surge
