The largest Kumquat garden in Hanoi is ready for Tet

January 29, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Hanoi has started getting in the mood for the national biggest festival of the year – the Vietnamese Traditional Lunar New Year. A kumquat pot is seen an indispensable bonsai for many Vietnamese families during the festive holiday.

As the Lunar New Year’s Eve of the Golden Buffalo 2021 is approaching, the atmosphere at the village of Tam Xa (Dong Anh district, Hanoi) became more hustling and bustling than ever. This is the time when the farmers harvest Kumquat after a long year of tending.

Implementing the local authority’s policy in restructuring crops, more than 10 years ago, farmers of Tam Xa commune started planting Kumquat trees in the riparian areas of the Red River. The locals learned Kumquat cultivation from bonsai growing areas in Hanoi such as Nhat Tan and Tu Lien wards in Tay Ho district or Van Giang district in the neighboring province of Hung Yen.

Farmers of Tam Xa commune grow kumquat in 80% of their 218 hectares of farm land. This special kind of bonsai for Tet holidays had become the cash crop, involving nearly 80% of local households in its cultivation.

In the days leading up to Tet holidays, the Kumquat gardens on the riparian areas of the Red River are bustling with harvesters and trucks lining up waiting to be loaded with Kumquat trees. This is also the time that Hanoians are preparing for their up-coming traditional Tet festival, thus, they flock here to buy the trees for home decoration during the most special days of the year.

According to local farmers, due to the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, the price of 2021 Kumquat crop drops. However, thanks to the favorable weather, the bonsai grows and develops relatively well and the trees are more beautiful, making the sale of Kumquat much easier.

Alongside with normal Kumquat which is planted on ordinary pot, farmers in Tam Xa commune have also diversified their offers by pruning the bonsai Kumquat in various shapes such as Dragon, Buffalo, among others. Compared to normal Kumquat, bonsai and shaped kumquat have a greater economic value. Currently, Tam Xa commune’s revenue from Kumquat cultivation is around VND1.7 billion (US$74,000)/ hectare/ year on average.

Some temporary camps are set up next to the kumquat gardens on the days before Tet holidays to facilitate the care as well as protecting them from thieves. The main source of income for many households in the area depends on these Kumquat gardens which is about to be harvested.

Planted on a large area of land in Hanoi, Tam Xa’s Kumquat has just been recognized as a “typical local product” by the City People’s Committee. Tam Xa Village is also recognized as a traditional craft village, providing bonsai products for the capital as well as attracting tourists to visit.

The Hanoitimes – A perfect kumquat tree full of fruits may cost around VND2 million (US$86).

As Tet is drawing nearer, several gardeners in Tay Ho and Bac Tu Liem districts in Hanoi, among other ornamental trees areas, are preparing to bring their unique plants and trees to downtown.

The owners of kumquat gardens in the traditional craft village of Tu Lien are rushing to prepare for Tet.

The pots are carved with the familiar images of communal houses in the village, buffalo, among other landscapes and objects of Vietnam’s countryside.

An owner of a kumquat garden in Tu Lien village said that perfect kumquat trees full of fruits may cost around VND2 million (US$86).

The traditional kumquat trees seem to be less preferred than the tinier bonsai kumquat, which is planted on pots of different shapes.

This year, many people rushed to buy kumquat trees in the middle of the Lunar Eleventh month, which falls in the middle of December.

The colors of the kumquat trees match with the red color of parallel sentences.

There are several pots in rat shape, this lunar year’s zodiac symbol, and the other 11 animals as well as the Sanxing (Deities) who are Fu (Happiness), Lu (Prosperity), and Shou (Longevity).

Aside from growing kumquat trees, gardeners also plant flowers including roses or daisy to decorate the altar during Tet.

Making flower tourism Hanoi’s specialty

February 9, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Flower, a special tourist product, will help increase income for farmers and attract tourists to the capital.

Hanoi has great potential for developing flower tourism. It is time for the city to pay attention to comprehensive investment in flower tourism and make it a specialty of the city and a special tourist product, contributing to increasing income for farmers and attracting tourists to the capital.

Poor product

Not only famous for its beautiful landscapes, Hanoi is also blessed by the typical flower seasons that make visitors fall in love. Every time when flower season comes, Hanoi puts on a new shirt. In Spring, peach blossoms cover the city in pink. In summer, it changes the colour into white of lilies and smells the pleasant scent of lotus. In autumn, it becomes “sweeter” with the scent of blackboard flowers.

Mentioning about flowers in Hanoi, it is also about the traditional flower villages that become inspiration for poetry, such as Ngoc Ha, Nghi Tam, Nhat Tan and Quang Ba. Every year when Lunar New Year Festival arrives, Hanoi opens the Spring flower markets which are also considered as an attractive tourism resource of Hanoi.

In addition to the traditional flower craft villages, in recent years, the suburbs of Hanoi have also developed strongly the profession of growing flowers and ornamental plants, forming specialized intensive production areas. This is a key condition for developing flower-eco tours.

Despite the great potential for tourism, in fact, Hanoi has yet exploited this “gold mine” effectively. Some tours to the flower villages are mostly for sightseeing and are offered spontaneously by some households. Moreover, trade and tourism promotion for this type of product has not properly received attention.

Chairman of the Management Board of the Institute for Culture Research and Development – Dr. Pham Viet Long said “The potential for developing flower tourism in Hanoi is very large but to turn flowers into a unique tourism product, Hanoi has still a long way to go.

Flower tourism products of Hanoi are still very poor and monotonous. “Born and grew up in Hanoi, I feel envy with people in Ha Giang province. Only with buckwheat flower, Ha Giang has changed into a special tourist attraction, each year attracting millions of tourists to visit and enjoy the flower,” he said.

Towards professional and sustainable growth

According to Dr. Pham Viet Long, in Hanoi, flower villages can completely develop into attractive flower tourist spots. However, the biggest challenge of the flower growing villages in Hanoi today is the infrastructure.

Traditional flower villages in inner-city areas such as Ngoc Ha, Nhat Tan, Nghi Tam, among others are facing the process of urbanization. Meanwhile, suburban flower villages are developing spontaneously. On the other hand, the land policy is also making it difficult for businesses to invest in this kind of tourism.

Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ta Van Tuong said that in order to effectively exploit the potential for flower tourism, it needs to promote the cooperation among the state, enterprises, people and media.

It is also neccessary to make a change in the perception of the regulators and  people about the role of flower tourism. Farmers need to actively build and develop flower villages and farms being mindful of flower tourism, while localities set up plan for sustainable development.

Garden and farm owners have to actively cooperate with tourism businesses to be included their tour programs and participate in promotional activities, including flower festivals, flower exhibitions, flower fairs, among others.

Hanoi also needs to improve its infrastructure, create favorable conditions for farms and cooperatives to build accommodation service for tourists.

Hanoi currently has 11 models of experiencing farm education tourism and four cooperatives participating in this potential field, according to Deputy Director of Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Ta Van Tuong.

Hanoi charity’s young volunteers spend nights rescuing homeless children

January 27, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

When Hoang Anh was cruising around flower gardens in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District at around midnight one day, he saw two boys in warm clothes and a middle-aged man sitting around a fire and decided to approach them.

At first glance the man looked like their father. But noticing that the boys seem tired, Anh and a friend decided to walk over and say hello.

“Can we sit here and talk to you guys?” he asked, and they looked up at him with suspicion.

Sitting down next to the fire, Anh looked at the two boys and said: “It is such a chilly night. Do you guys need any help?”

The boys, one skinny and the other chubby, remained silent while the man abruptly stood up, said he was taking his dog for a walk, and left.

Anh tried to make friends with the children and introduced himself.

“We belong to the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, which helps homeless children. I can help you guys find accommodation and a place to play football and get health checks. It is unsafe for you to be out this late at night since there are many bad people on the streets.”

He told them about some of the situations he had seen and warned them of the dangers lurking on the streets, and showed some pictures of the street children he had helped.

After seeing there were some kids they knew in the pictures and his friendly way of speaking, the boys gradually lowered their guard and opened up.

The skinny one said his identification papers had been stolen when he was sleeping in the garden a few days ago. Now he could not find a job, but still did not want to go back to his hometown. The other, who was 14 years old, said he was from the northern Bac Kan Province and his father was in prison.

Anh said: “I can help you guys find a safe place to sleep tonight. If you don’t like it, I can bring you back here.”

But they had been living on the street for long, and their survival instincts possibly kicked in, and they refused his offer immediately.

He then gave them some money to find a place to sleep and his contact information and told them to meet him at the same place the next morning.

The chubby boy turned up the next morning, and Anh took him to the foundation. He can decide to stay there with other similar children if he likes it or go and live with a foster family.

Anh, 27, is the captain of the street outreach team at the Hanoi-based charity that has been assisting children in crises since 2003.

The team goes out into the streets every night to look for destitute children under bridges and in parks, bus stations and other places.

It has seven members and a large support staff. In addition to its main task of finding homeless children, the team also helps children living at the charity’s boarding houses and organizes physical activities and health checks for them.

The team members also take street children back to their homes.

The main aim is to ensure destitute children are not dragged into committing crimes and are safe from bad influences.

Earlier that night Anh and his colleague had gone to four Internet cafes in nearby My Dinh in Nam Tu Liem District to look for children and told the owners to let them know if they come across children who need assistance.

Here they gave a jacket to a boy who had run away from home in another province.

“Many homeless children from other provinces show up around the My Dinh area, especially during summer and around Lunar New Year,” Anh says.

“They are easy prey for pedophiles and job brokers. Since they have just arrived in the capital and have a little money and tend go to Internet cafes to play games.

“We always try to reach the children before they encounter bad people.”

After three years as a member of the street outreach team, Doan Cong thinks he is doing a “meaningful” job.

One day late at night in August he and his colleague Minh Hai spotted two children sitting at a bus stop near the My Dinh bus station and a middle-aged man hovering over them.

Since the children looked tired and wore stained, tattered clothes, Cong decided they were not familiar with the city. He parked his vehicle and approached them.

He found out that the boys, aged 15 and 17, had left their hometown in Ha Giang Province and worked for half a month in Hanoi before their employer closed down due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Both had used up their wages of VND400,000 ($17.30) while searching for new jobs, but had not been lucky.

After roaming the streets for three days, they ended up at the bus station.

They looked at the man and whispered to Cong: “He told us he would give us each VND100,000 if we touch his genitals. We refused, but he was insistent and is waiting for us to change our minds.”

Cong and Hai took the boys to an Internet shop, got them food and told them to spend the night there. The next morning Cong returned, reassured that their families had promised to pick them up after he had informed them.

He gave the pair some money and his contact information in case they needed help.

The young social workers have had to confront dubious people to protect homeless children. Two months ago Anh had to fight off two pedophiles who were asking three boys to go home and sleep with them.

Minh Hai, who has been on the team for two years, shares a story from last winter. One night, on a curb behind the My Dinh bus station, he saw a boy with a backpack and a cap who looked he had little strength left. He got off his motorbike and slowly walked up to the boy.

He asked him: “You look tired. Have you had dinner?”

The boy looked scared, and his eyes kept darting around.

After he walked behind him for around two kilometers, the boy became less scared of him. Hai gave him a box of sticky rice and the boy gulped it down.

After eating he revealed that he had been lured into a debt collection gang about a month ago. He was instructed to work out to look strong and go collect debts.

He managed to escape from that gang, but was now afraid its members would catch with him and mete out punishment. He also did not know where to go or who to ask for help.

On average, the street outreach team helps around 100 children each year. Many of the children have returned to their families or have been put in school. Many of them now work at restaurants or hotels, in tourism and others.

About 10 percent of Blue Dragon’s workers were themselves children rescued by the charity. Having been there before, now they help children who are in a similar situation.

Anh says: “I think my job is like that of a filter: kids we rescue have the ability to rebuild their lives, but if we do not, they are easily caught up in bad situations.”

Recently the two boys from Ha Giang called Cong to say they had returned home and work in the fields with their parents, and are waiting until they are old enough to get proper works.

The team members say there are always children being pushed out into the streets for various reasons, and there are many traps awaiting them. That is why the team has been out on the streets for the last 17 years.

Blue Dragon has helped 607 street children reunite with their families, rescued 1,000 trafficked kids and helped 5,259 children go to school or get jobs.
