US President Joe Biden is visiting Japan to attend the meeting of the Quad group of countries – Australia, India, Japan and the United States in Tokyo- which have increased cooperation in the face of China’s growing assertiveness. According to the Financial Times report, the maritive initiative will enable these countries to monitor illegal fishing even when the boats have turned off the transponders which are typically used to track vessels. The U.S.-Indo Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell had said earlier this month that United States will soon announce plans to battle illegal fishing in the U.S. Several countries in the Indo-Pacific region chafe at China’s vast fishing fleet. U.S., Japan, Australia, and India will unveil a maritime initiative at the Quad summit in Tokyo to curb illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific, the Financial Times reported on Saturday, citing a U.S. official. The report said that the maritime initiative will use satellite technology to create a tracking system for illegal fishing from the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific by connecting surveillance centers in Singapore and India. After its first flight back to Nha Trang from Seoul on Friday, Vietjet will continue to reopen routes connecting Seoul with Phu Quoc and Hai Phong later this month, ready to welcome the wave of tourists between the two countries when South Korea officially announced the re-issuance of short-term tourist visas for international and Vietnamese tourists from June 1, 2022. The Nha Trang-Seoul route is operated with three round-trip flights per week from May 20, 2022 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Vietnam and Australia are both members of at least three free trade agreements, namely ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), CPTPP and the Regional Economic Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). According to data of the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, last year, two-way trade between Vietnam and Australia hit 12.4 billion USD for the first time, up more than 49 percent compared with that of 2020. The value of shipments to Australia reached more than 4.45 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 23 percent. Vietnam spent nearly 8 billion USD in importing goods from Australia, up nearly 70 percent against 2020’s figure. Vietnam's exports to Australia are growing strongly, reaching 1.38 billion USD in the first quarter of 2022, a surge of 32.36 percent against the same period last year.
