Shrimp aquaculture on sandy land started in 2000 in some localities at a small scale. Thanks to favorable conditions of land and sea water, aquaculture in coastal provinces has increased sharply in recent years both in terms of area and output. According to the statistics by the Directorate of Fisheries, the area of shrimp farming on sandy land has reached more than 3,000ha across 14 central provinces, generating some 41,700 tons per crop. Ongoing investment has ensured that contraceptives, services and information are available to virtually the entire nation, experts agreed at a ceremony to mark World Population Day on Wednesday in Hà Nội with the theme of "Family Planning is a Human Right". The rate of modern contraceptive use rose from 37 per cent in 1988 to 67 per cent in 2016. Việt Nam’s maternal mortality rate dropped significantly from 233 deaths per 100,000 live births in the 1990s to 58 per 100,000 live births in 2016. The nation’s fertility rate also dropped by more than half, from an average of five children per couple in the 1970s to the replacement rate of 2.09 in 2006. This was announced at a conference in the locality on Wednesday, held by the provincial Department of Planning and Investment and Tra Vinh SME Development Project’s management authority. The event discussed plans to support the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to Pham Van Be Sau, deputy director of the provincial Department of Planning and Investment and Tra Vinh SME Development project, local SMEs are set to create 22,000-25,000 jobs per year from now until 2020, bringing a monthly income of VND4.5-4.7 million for each labourer.
