“Eroica 2020” video installation to close Beethoven 250th anniversary celebrations

The Hanoitimes – The cultural event is a contribution from Vietnam to the international exhibition entitled ‘Hotel Beethoven’ to commemorate Beethoven’s 250 birthday anniversary.

‘Hotel Beethoven’ is an exhibition about Beethoven life and works, which has been organized by BOZAR, the Center for Fine Arts in Brussels, in collaboration with the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn.

To close to the Beethoven 250th anniversary celebrations, the Embassies of Belgium in Vietnam and Germany in Hanoi jointly organized a video art exhibition of Nguyen Le Hoang Viet from 25th January to February, 2021 at the Goethe-Institut in Hanoi (No 56 -60 Nguyen Thai Hoc street, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi).

The event is funded by the German Minister of State for Culture and the Media in the framework of the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The year of 2020 is marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and many forms of social distancing and quarantine measures. Humans had to stay inside rooms and the distance amon people in public is specifically defined.

Vietnamese filmmaker Viet turns to Beethoven’s music and wonders “if it can provide us with a window to escape the four walls surrounding us. How can his music take us to the world outside?”

Blending a time-stretched version of Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” – the monumental masterpiece of Beethoven – with zoom-ins, zoom-outs, shots of Hanoians’ daily life activities, this video installation invites audiences on a visual journey of human survival in this strange time.

Mr. Viet had gained international recognition as Vietnam’s representative filmmaker to attend some film festivals of Short Shorts, BFI Flare London, Festival of 3 Continents.

The Embassy of Belgium, the Embassy of Germany, and the Goethe-Institut Hanoi will co-organize the exhibition ‘Eroica 2020’ by artist Nguyen Le Hoang Viet next week to commemorate Beethoven’s 250th birthday.

The exhibition will open daily from 9:00 am until 7:00 pm between January 26 and February 4 in the exhibition hall of the Goethe-Institut, the organizers said in a press release on Thursday.

An opening event will take place at 6:00 pm on January 25.

‘Eroica 2020’ is a contribution from Vietnam to the international exhibition Hotel Beethoven, which has been organized by BOZAR, which is the Center for Fine Arts in Brussels, in collaboration with the Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, with funds coming from by the German Minister of State for Culture and the Media in the framework of the German Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The exhibition is to commemorate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, falling on December 17, 2020.

Hotel Beethoven is an exhibition about Beethoven, his music, his ideas, and his relevance for the world heritage of music today.

As an exceptional innovator, Beethoven is considered a perennial starting point and source of inspiration for questions and ideas about the power of sound.

From popular culture to conceptual art, spanning a time frame from 1770 to 2020, Hotel Beethoven is a time-traveling musical mix of different eras and points of view that features manuscripts and instruments alongside works from such artists as Antoine Bourdelle, Raoul Hausmann, Andy Warhol, Katie Paterson, Christan Marclay, Christine Sun Kim, and John Baldessari.

The exhibition in Brussels can be visited until February 14.

BOZAR invited six visual artists from Albania, Austria, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Russia, and Vietnam to be accommodated in the Hotel Beethoven.

The Vietnamese contribution to this international celebration is an 11-minute film directed by Nguyen Le Hoang Viet.

Buffalo in Vietnamese culture

The buffalo is the traditional symbol of Vietnam, representing bravery, happiness, and prosperity. Buffalos also play a very important role in Vietnamese agriculture, being a farmer’s most valued possession and often treated like a member of the family.

Not many people know that the buffalo also contributed greatly to the success of Vietnam’s revolution against foreign invaders. They were not only used to carry loads for farmers but also pulled carts of supplies for soldiers during wartime. Buffalos were an “undercover” means of transport, being able to walk on very poor roads, cross bridges and rivers, and climb steep hills.

Apart from their contribution to Vietnam’s economy and history, buffalo are also a cultural symbol of the country. They have many qualities Vietnamese people appreciate, such as diligence, a gentle disposition, and loyalty, and can also symbolise powerful warriors.

Buffalos appear in many stories about Vietnamese heroes, in Dong Ho paintings, at festivals, and in poetry as a symbol of a peaceful and prosperous life.

Today, due to industrialisation in agriculture, the buffalo is no longer such a major asset. The animal’s image is also less likely to appear in cultural and artistic works. The “Buffalo in Vietnamese Life” exhibition was therefore opened recently at the Old Quarter Cultural Center, 50 Dao Duy Tu Street, Hanoi, in an effort to promote the animal among the public.

The exhibition introduces about 70 artifacts, sculptures, and paintings on buffalo in Vietnam ese life, recalling memories of peaceful lives in the countryside. It is also expected to help children in cities gain a better understanding of the special beast.

It is open to the public until the end of the Lunar New Year ./.

HCMC – Design students from RMIT University are showcasing their fresh takes on urban transformation and human connections at the Saigon: Interplay exhibition in HCMC, the result of a three-month project between the Museum of HCMC and RMIT, focusing on the transformation of Vietnam’s biggest metropolis.

The exhibition features over 20 works by final-year students from RMIT University’s Bachelor of Design Studies program.

With the mutual aim of connecting the city and its people, the ideas presented range from community video and photography projects to public art work displays, motorbike parades, bicycling tours and other novel ideas.

Prior to coming up with this project, RMIT lecturers found that technological and media innovations over the past 20 years have left museums around the world questioning traditional models of artifact collection, conservation, exhibition and publication.

Thus, museums are turning to their immediate surroundings to ask how they can renew their local ties and refresh their community bonds. The RMIT students’ works were developed in response to this transformative context.

“The works on display present really creative and new ideas that touch on various aspects of life. The students created these works and they are also the ones to benefit the most from this connection with our museum,” a representative of the Museum of HCMC said.

The Saigon: Interplay exhibition is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until March 21 at the Museum of HCMC, 65 Ly Tu Trong Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1.

Google’s campaign to promote Vietnam Tourism

The Hanoitimes – The online initiative of “Wonders of Vietnam” showcases the beauty of Son Doong Cave, the Hoi An Lantern Festival and Nha Nhac as well as interactive features that allow visitors to experience the wonders of Vietnam in a new way.

Google Arts & Culture launched Wonders of Vietnam online project featuring multiple highlights of Vietnam’s UNESCO heritage sites for the first time, including natural sites and tangible and intangible heritage.

Completed in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, local tourism boards of Da Nang, Quang Nam, Thua Thien Hue and Quang Binh, National Geographic award-winning photographer Tran Tuan Viet and Oxalis Adventure, the new project aims to capture and preserve the beauty of Vietnam for audiences all over the world.

The online project features 35 exhibitions and 1,369 stunning pictures, bringing together a rich perspective of Vietnam for people to connect with during and beyond the pandemic. Highlights include exhibits about Son Doong Cave in Quang Binh province, the Hoi An Lantern Festival in Hoi An ancient town, Quang Nam province Nha Nhac (Royal court music) in Hue city.

People can explore highlights of the exhibit, watch videos of sites set to traditional Vietnamese music or take a bird’s-eye view of famous sites through panoramic pictures. This project is an important part of Google’s overall support of the local tourism industry, which has been badly affected with travel restrictions because of the pandemic.

By showcasing the wonders of Vietnam, specifically from the Central region, the project aims to also raise awareness on preserving the sites affected by the recent floods in Central Vietnam.

“Promoting digital transformation and accelerating the application of technology in advertising promotion are an important direction of the Vietnam tourism industry to proactively approach and effectively take part in the 4th Industrial Revolution.
