A child gets vaccinated at a centre in HCM City (Photo: VNA)   HCM City (VNA) - A combination of various public health and preventive medicine specialties should be paid attention to at the domestic and international levels to protect people’s health amid emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases globally, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Truong Son told a recent conference at the Pasteur Institute in HCM City. Problems in one country could affect other countries easier than in the past since pathogens and vectors now move further and faster than ever before through the global transportation network, he pointed out. The museum, opened in early December at 374 Nguyen Son Street in Tan Phu District, includes some Ngoc Linh ginseng tubers that are worth billions of Vietnamese dong each (VND1 billion = $43,000). "Ngoc Linh ginseng not only has medicinal properties but also history and culture," said Nguyen Tan Viet, its director.  "Having researched for years, I had a strong desire to build a museum so that others too could appreciate and learn more about this precious ginseng species," he added. Viet had earlier spent 15 year curating the collection. On entering the 250-square-meter museum, visitors are greeted by written works, pictures and a national map depicting the distributions of the scores of varieties of Ngoc Linh. This family of ginseng is mainly found at an altitude of 1,200-2,000 meters on Ngoc Linh Mountain straddling the provinces of Quang Nam and Kon Tum. At 50, Nguyen Thi Thanh Van has done well for herself. The dentist, based in the central province of Nghe An, has settled her children well, too. Her eldest son is lecturer in a university in Hanoi about to complete his PhD thesis. The younger one is a research fellow in the UK. But Van, set to retire in five years, wants to go back in time. The vocational diploma holder in medicine wants to write her high school exams and go to college. Van is one of the hundreds of thousands of students nationwide who are sitting for their high school graduation exams. “When I was young, some circumstances prevented me from going to college,” Van said. She believes a solid legal framework is necessary to make sure there is plenty of water for future generations. “We need a scheme for the Water Supply Law, and submit it to the Government and the National Assembly,” Khanh said. “It is needed to survey and catalogue important sources to have an effective protection, exploitation and use plan.” There are more than 200 water supply enterprises, mainly operating as joint stock companies.
