‘Parasite’ adult children worry sociologists
When the woman’s family asked Thanh why he did not come himself, she told them, "He was embarrassed since the two had never met before." Someone from the family laughed and said: "How can I let my kid date him if he is more than 30 years old and still asks his mother to get him phone numbers from other women?" The 65-year-old was speechless and returned home. Her son, Minh Tien, had brought home and introduced a few girlfriends to her in the past, but no one had interested her too much. She admits her son is lazy and worries she will not be able to take care of both of them if he ends up marrying a woman who is also lazy or only cares about her looks. She likes the woman she went to meet for her hard-working nature and dedication to family, and believes someone like that will change her son’s personality. The national 'yellow alert', issued late on Thursday, comes after regions from Sichuan in the southwest to Shanghai in the Yangtze delta have experienced weeks of extreme heat, with government officials repeatedly citing global climate change as the cause. As many as 66 rivers across 34 counties in the southwestern region of Chongqing have dried up, state broadcaster CCTV said on Friday. Rainfall in Chongqing this year is down 60% compared to the seasonal norm, and the soil in several districts is severely short of moisture, CCTV said, citing local government data. The district of Beibei, north of Chongqing's urban centre, saw temperatures hit 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit) on … [Read more...] about China issues first national drought alert, battles to save crops in extreme heatwave

Asia rice – Supply concerns lift Indian rates; Vietnam loses out to competition
Indian rates for rice exports rose this week as lower planting fuelled concerns over supplies from the new season, while Vietnamese prices and quality of the grain lagged peers. Top exporter India's 5% broken parboiled variety <RI-INBKN5-P1> was quoted at $365-$371 per tonne, up from last week's $360-$366. "Weather is not supporting crop in eastern and northern India. Traders have started quoting higher prices for paddy assuming lower production from the new crop," said an exporter based at Kakinada in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Neighbouring Bangladesh will begin selling rice at a cheaper rate for 5 million poor families and expand such sales from September, in a bid to rein in soaring domestic prices, which saw yet another uptick after the government hiked domestic oil prices. "I hope domestic rice markets will be stable after the beginning of the sales," Bangladesh Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said, adding that the country has adequate stock. … [Read more...] about Asia rice – Supply concerns lift Indian rates; Vietnam loses out to competition
