On Saturday morning, Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Center released members of five wild animal species at the Huong Son special-use forest in My Duc District. Among them were king cobras, wildcats and certain bird species, all considered endangered and included on the IUCN Red List. The released animals were seized from traffickers in northern Vietnam. Before their release, forest rangers and rescue personnel had surveyed the habitats for temperature, terrain and available food sources. Luong Xuan Hong, director of Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Center, said animals seized after every trafficking incident are sent to the center. Experts then release them back into the wild. Ho Chi Minh City resident transfers endangered water bird to authorities
A man in Ho Chi Minh City handed over a 0.4-kilogram oriental darter he had caught to the local forest protection unit this week after learning that the bird is listed as rare and endangered. Vo Thanh Long, a 39-year-old resident in Go Vap District, transferred the bird to the municipal Forest Protection Division, under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, on Tuesday. The oriental darter, with the scientific name Anhinga melanogaster, belongs to the endangered, rare, and precious wildlife species of group IB that needs to be protected under a decree issued by the central government in 2019, according to local rangers. Elephants enjoy a "buffet" of fruit and vegetables marked its World Elephant Day. World Elephant Day, observed on August 12, was created with the main objective of preserving and protecting this animal and seeking solutions to the problem of human-elephant conflict. A project on elephant preservation in Dak Lak, Dong Nai and Nghe An was approved by the Government in 2006. Recently, in Decision No. 413/QD-TTg dated March 31, 2022, the Prime Minister agreed with the project’s adjustment. Under the decision, the elephant conservation plan will be implemented until the end of 2025. Vietnam fisheries watchdog orders inquiry into video of giant arapaima release
The Vietnamese Directorate of Fisheries required its subordinates in Ho Chi Minh City to verify whether a recently-circulated video capturing the release of an arapaima gigas that allegedly took place at a wharf in the city is true or not. Captioned 'Releasing 90-kilogram (198 pounds) arapaima gigas,' the 30-second video showed about 10 people on a boat returning a large arapaima back to the water. The location of the boat was believed to be at a wharf in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City. Arapaima gigas, also known as pirarucu, is an air-breathing fish that is native to the rainforest rivers of South America’s Amazon Basin and nearby lakes and swamps, according to National Geographic . Among the largest freshwater fish species, it can grow up to 15 feet long and weigh up to 440 pounds, though fish that big have not been reported for many years.
