521 endangered animals saved in 2018
An endangered monkey held captive. - Photo courtesy of ENV Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI – As many as 521 endangered wildlife animals were saved in Việt Nam in 2018 thanks to the engagement of people and law enforcement agencies, NGO Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV) announced on Monday. Up to 1,666 wildlife-related violations were also detected, of which 64 per cent involved illegally in advertising and trading endangered animals and products made from them. To avoid law enforcement agencies, traders use the internet as an exchange platform to commit the crimes. ENV recorded 800 wildlife violation cases on the internet, with more than 1,200 links showing signs of violation. In September 2018, Bá Thước District Police in the central province of Thanh Hoá seized a 12-litre bottle of alcohol with two bear legs inside. The bottle was advertised on Facebook. Nghe – Vietnamese traditional sacred animal in the spotlight
A statue of a nghe displayed at the exhibition (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - Images and stories of the nghe (a sacred and mythical animal in Vietnamese traditional culture) are currently on display at the capital city’s Temple of Literature, highlighting the important role of this symbol in the history and culture of the country. The exhibition features 200 photos and documents of the sacred animal which has a lion’s head, a long tail and a dog-like body, that guards temples and communal houses. The show helps promote the unique features of the traditional art of Vietnam that has been preserved in the community for centuries. It also aims to raise awareness of the sacred symbol while comparing it with other sacred animals from China, Japan and Korea – countries with similar culture and religion to Vietnam. (Photo: WWF–Vietnam, USAID, Leibniz-IZW) Hanoi (VNA) – A camera trap has caught the large-antlered muntjac, one of the rarest and most threatened mammal species of Southeast Asia, for the first time in the central province of Quang Nam. The mammal is classified as a rare and endangered animal in the red book. The provincial Forest Protection Department said on May 23 that the photographs captured two individuals, a male and a female, which are both mature and of reproductive age.
