Doctor brings medical advancements to disadvantaged province

LÀO CAI — Nguyễn Thị Hằng, a teacher of Tân An 1 Primary School in the northern province of Lào Cai left a thank you note before leaving the Urology Surgery Department of Lào Cai Province General Hospital.

The note was sent to the head of the department doctor Nguyễn Văn Hải and other medial workers.

“Everyone was so nice to me,” Hằng said, adding that her pain seemed relieved much when a nurse told her that: “I will take your blood for testing. Please tell me if it hurts!”

Doctor Hải carefully explained her health problems, recommended possible treatment options and encouraged her a lot in a very gentle manner, Hằng said.

“We patients feel at home when staying at the hospital. The doctors and nurses treat us as if they were our family members,” Hằng wrote.

Hải said that he received a lot of thank-you notes and letters from patients like Hằng, which inspired him and made him confident in his career choice.

“A doctor not only treats people but also encourages them, reassures them and helps them stay strong during their illness,” Hải said.

Hải is known as one of the very first doctors who introduced the laparoscopy technique in the northern mountainous province of Lào Cai.

“I am very interested in laparoscopy with its significant outstanding advantages,” he said, adding that he was lucky to attend training classes on laparoscopy offered by leading doctors in Việt Nam.

With his understanding of laparoscopy, he has launched many initiatives to apply laparoscopy techniques in his hospital which is located in a disadvantaged area in Việt Nam.

People living in mountainous areas with modest infrastructure development, particularly in transportation, lacked access to medical advances, Hải said.

In many cases when laparoscopy could help solve patients’ health problems easily, due to a shortage of medical equipment, the patients still had to undergo conventional laparotomy which brings higher health risks.

In other cases, people had simple health problems but travel difficulties made them arrive at hospital too late, which resulted in serious damage, complications or even death, Hải said.

He said he was so sorry to remember a case of a 10-month old baby who died of intussusception in 2014.

“Intussusception is a serious condition in which part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. This telescoping action often blocks food or fluid from passing through. Intussusception also cuts off the blood supply to the part of the intestine that’s affected. This can lead to a tear in the bowel (perforation), infection and death of bowel tissue,” reads the world-famous Mayo Clinic’s description of the condition.

The baby from the mountainous district of Mường Khương was taken to the hospital in the early morning and the intussusception was not difficult to treat, Hải said, “But the baby arrived at the hospital too late. We could not save him.”

Seeing modern advanced medical equipment at hospitals in other countries where he attended training courses, Hải pitied his patients in Lào Cai, most of whom are poor, from ethnic minorities and unable to afford expensive surgeries.

Returning to Việt Nam, Hải spent more time studying laparoscopy, particularly single-port laparoscopy (SPL) – a recently developed technique in laparoscopic surgery.

Single-port laparoscopy was a surgical technique that passes through the navel without leaving a scar, Hải said, explaining that if the normal appendix laparoscopy has about 3-4 holes, with this application, doctors only need one hole to perform the surgical technique.

However, this application required specialised complex surgical means, Hải said.

To fix this disadvantage, from a conventional device, Hải manipulated it by fabricating a small needle to aid in moving the appendix root to cut the appendix or move the gallbladder to perform cholecystectomy. After that, the needle would be removed and the patient has only a pin-foot scar.

Other tools are all inserted and exit through the navel. Thus, Hải’s patients, after recovering, have almost no visible incisions.

Normally, patients have to spend an extra few tens of millions of Vietnamese đồng on specialised tools used in appendix removal surgery or gallbladder surgery.

Meanwhile, at the Department of Urology in the General Hospital of Lao Cai Province, there is no additional cost for surgical tools thanks to Hải’s initiative.

This initiative not only helps patients enjoy the latest medical advances, reduce pain and shorten hospital stays but they also incur no additional costs for surgery. In addition, local people don’t need to travel to central hospitals for such surgery anymore.

In 2016, Hải started to lead the Department of Urology and Surgery and was determined to promote the application of high-tech services.

In 2016 – the first year of the establishment of the Department of Urology and Surgery, the department’s doctors successfully implemented two new techniques that are usually performed in central hospitals: laparoscopic surgery to completely remove the kidney and laparoscopy to connect the renal pelvis and ureter.

Phạm Văn Thinh, director of Lào Cai Provine General Hospital, said Hải was an example of a hard-working, enthusiastic and responsible doctor.

With his leadership, the Urology Surgery Department has earned great fame among hospitals across the country.

The department’s staff have gained their patients’ trust and appreciation, which was the biggest gift to medical workers, Thinh said. — VNS

On February 27, 1955, President Hồ Chí Minh sent a letter to a conference of medical cadres.

In the letter, he called on medical workers to be honest and united with one another, love patients and strive for the national medical sector’s development.

With the significance of the letter, the Council of Ministers (now the Government) on February 6, 1985, issued a decision to make February 27 Vietnamese Doctors’ Day.

Flowers, gifts and greetings are usually sent to medical workers on the day. During this occasion, people usually talk about the contributions of doctors, their efforts in medical treatment and examinations as well as patients’ gratitude towards them.

Tiger Woods in surgery after roll-over car crash

February 24, 2021 by www.vir.com.vn

tiger woods in surgery after roll over car crash
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, CA – FEBRUARY 23: A sign for the Genesis Invitational golf tournament is seen on the door of the car that golf legend Tiger Woods was driving when seriously injured in a rollover accident on February 23, 2021 in Rolling Hills Estates, California. Rescuers used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate him from the car where he reportedly sustained major leg injuries. Law enforcement reports that there was no evidence of impairment. Woods did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the early-morning incident, and underwent surgery after the roll-over collision, said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash which occurred on a steep stretch of road known as an accident “hotspot,” where Woods was travelling at “a greater speed than normal,” said the sheriff.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said deputy Carlos Gonzalez, the first officer to arrive on scene.

Gonzalez found Woods trapped in his vehicle but conscious, appearing “calm and lucid” and able to identify himself to the deputy as “Tiger.”

“It is my understanding that he had serious injuries to both legs,” said Los Angeles County fire chief Daryl Osby, describing Woods’ condition as “stable.”

Firefighters and paramedics extricated Woods from the wreckage of his SUV and transported him with a neck collar and backboard to a local hospital via road, where he underwent surgery.

There was “no evidence of impairment at this time” including any influence of narcotics, mediciation or alcohol, said Villanueva, adding that the crash remained “subject to investigation.”

He added that no blood was drawn at the scene of the crash because the sheriff’s office does not have that capability.

Woods, one of the most successful golfers of all time, has won 15 major golf championships.

He recently underwent his fifth back surgery, and said he was uncertain if he will be able to play at the upcoming Masters, which he last won in 2019.

Woods, 45, was in the area for his annual Genesis Invitational golf tournament at the Riviera Country Club, and was driving a courtesy car on the morning of the crash.

“We are awaiting further information when he comes out of surgery. On behalf of the PGA Tour and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

– ‘True champion’ –

The crash occurred near the hilly Palos Verdes peninsula, at the bottom of a steep stretch of road which has runaway truck ramps for vehicles that lose control going downhill.

The section has become notorious for fatal accidents over the years.

“Apparently the first contact was with the center median, and from there (the car) crossed into the opposing lane of traffic, hit the curb, hit a tree, and there was several rollovers during that process,” said Villanueva, who did not provide a cause of the crash.

The car ended up several hundred feet from the inital impact, lying on its side on a patch of grass some distance off the road, with its hood badly damaged.

News of the crash spread rapidly around the sport world and beyond, with figures inside and outside golfing swift to send their prayers and best wishes to Woods.

Skier Lindsey Vonn, Woods’ former girlfriend, tweeted: “Praying for TW right now.”

“Sending my prayers to @TigerWoods and his family tonight — here’s to a speedy recovery for the GOAT of golf,” said former US president Barack Obama.

“If we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s to never count Tiger out.”

Fellow ex-president Donald Trump, speaking to Fox, urged Woods to “get better and get out there because we all miss him.”

– ‘Deeply concerned’ –

Woods was one of the most revered athletes in the world when he became engulfed in scandal in late 2009.

He smashed his car into a tree and a fire hydrant outside his luxury Florida home, sparking a series of scandalous revelations that doomed his marriage and put his game in freefall.

He later divorced from his Swedish wife Elin Nordegren, with whom he has two children, after a cascade of women came forward to say they had affairs with the golfer, making him fodder for tabloids around the world.

Woods underwent four back surgeries between 2014 and 2017.

In May 2017, Woods was arrested near his Florida home for being asleep at the wheel of his car in a traffic lane.

Woods said he had taken prescription drugs and pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

But he made an astonishing comeback to win the Masters in 2019, his first major title since 2008.

He is the winner of 82 US PGA titles, level with Sam Snead for the all-time record.

In 2000-2001, while aged just 25, Woods became the first man to hold the US Open, British Open, the USPGA and the Masters titles at the same time.

Woods remains three major victories shy of the all-time record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus.

“Barbara and I just heard about Tiger’s accident, and like everyone else, we are deeply concerned,” tweeted Nicklaus.

“We want to offer him our heartfelt support and prayers at this difficult time. Please join us in wishing Tiger a successful surgery and all the best for a full recovery.”

The hospital has set up a small medical station with three health workers on Truong Sa, which has now become a healthcare centre providing basic internal medicine and surgical services.

It has been bestowed with the title of “Hero of the People’s Armed Forces” twice.

Son said the establishment of the medical centre not only marked a milestone for the hospital but also was an honour for it to shoulder such a mission on Truong Sa.

The hospital was also entrusted by the Central Military Commission and the Ministry of National Defence with developing Vietnam’s first Level-2 Field Hospital to take on the UN’s peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

Healthcare for the disadvantaged

February 25, 2021 by www.vir.com.vn

1532 p16 healthcare for the disadvantaged
The partnership helps those that live far from high-level hospitals

At the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Nghia Lo General Hospital, doctors are consistently providing active care for sick newborns, especially babies born prematurely to young mothers, the majority of whom are from ethnic minority groups.

As a common practice, ethnic minority women still have to carry out heavy farming work whilst receiving inadequate nutrition during their pregnancy. The consequence is that many infants are prematurely born.

As Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Mai from the NICU explained, “Ethnic minority groups live in remote villages in mountainous areas which are hard to reach. It takes them hours to get to the NICU. As a result, many infants with infections come to our unit only in severe condition.”

In 2014 the NICU was established in order to take better care of these children in the hospital without requiring at least four hours to travel to the central hospital. At the time, Mai and many other physicians lacked both professional expertise and proper medical equipment to take care of the sick new-born babies.

To deal with this issue, GSK and Save the Children are cooperating to contribute to the development and operation of the NICU. Electrical equipment such as ventilators, automatic infusion machines, electric syringes, and monitors have been provided for the unit. In addition, 10 doctors and nurses have received training and practical experience at the National Children’s Hospital. With the support, Mai’s unit has helped save the lives of mothers and their babies from some of the most remote areas in the northern province of Yen Bai.

One of them was a H’Mong baby boy. Three years ago, he was born prematurely at 31 weeks at home in a remote village in Yen Bai. At one day old, the baby was brought to the NICU in critical condition, with bluish discolouration on his skin and severe infections. At that moment, no-one thought that he could make it, but with the wholehearted care of the doctors, he recovered miraculously and is now an active and healthy toddler.

Besides the support for Nghia Lo General Hospital, the cooperation between GSK and Save the Children has expanded to the village of Tram Tau, in Van Chan district of Yen Bai province. Hundreds of health staff, including midwives from the commune health centres, are receiving intensive training on birth delivery and handling common obstetrics-related problems, which allows nurses to help women at birth, as well as newborn resuscitation and safe referral in Nghia Lo General Hospital.

This means that many pregnant women do not need to travel long distances to higher level hospitals, but rather give birth safely at their local commune health centres.

The GSK and Save the Children partnership aims to save the lives of a million of the poorest children in the world, with the flagship community partnership programme supporting training and continuous medical education for healthcare professionals across many remote areas including Vietnam.

Science-led global healthcare GSK is continuing the establishment of a sustainable and accountable business in Vietnam, by setting the goal to offer innovative anti-infectives, respiratory medicines and life-course vaccine portfolio that supports healthcare professionals to prevent and treat for patient. Besides the Save the Children partnership, GSK also is committed to tackling global healthcare issues by working with the Medical Administration Department at the Ministry of Health and the British Embassy to Vietnam with an aim to support the Vietnamese government’s long-term strategy and align with the initiatives of the UK government to support developing countries.

Save the Children started its work in Vietnam in 1990 and has since expanded its programmes to cover education, health and nutrition, child protection and child poverty, disaster risk reduction, and also emergency response. It spans 22 cities and provinces across the country with offices in Hanoi, Haiphong, Lao Cai, Danang, and in Ho Chi Minh City.
