TAY NINH (VNS)- The People's Committee in southern Tay Ninh Province has fined Hai Duong Co Ltd VND227.5 million (US$10,700) for illegally discharging untreated waste water into Vam Co Dong River. The company specialises in making paper and packing material. A police investigation found that the pollution in the river was 4.21 times higher than permitted. On Jan 11, Dong Nai Police discovered a dye factory of Liberty Lace Ltd Co in Bien Hoa 2 Industrial Park discharged untreated waste water into the environment. The factory was found pumping untreated waste water from an underground reservoir to another reservoir on a 16-metre-high site. The waste water was then dumped into the ground of the company through a rain-water drainage system. IZ businesses dump waste water (08-11-2008) HA NOI — Many businesses in Tan Phu Trung Industrial Zone in Cu Chi District, 40km northwest of HCM City, have been caught dumping untreated waste water into the Thay Cai canal, according to the municipal People's Council. Only 28 out of the 48 businesses operating in the zone have waste treatment facilities, but even treated waste water does not yet meet the environmental protection standards, said Le Van Thanh, director of the Sai Gon Tay Bac company, which owns the industrial zone. Meanwhile, waste treatment facilities were not running regularly at some businesses, he said. The majority of businesses produce rubber, paper, chemicals or dye. "Thousands of local people who live near the Thay Cai canal have been endangered for many years by the pollution. Vedan's sluice gate pumping water into Thi Vai River on Dec 10, 2009 (Pho to: theo Tuoi tre) Environment police in southern Dong Nai Province on Thursday discovered sewage discharged into a river where a Taiwanese-owned company MSG manufacturer was caught red-handed directly dumping waste water a year ago. Police took the sample of the waste water, described as "darker and smellier" than it was one year ago, for testing. A local resident said the water came from a sluice gate of MSG producer Vedan, the company that was caught by environmental police dumping into the Thi Vai River in September last year. Police said the sample was taken for tests at the request of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Following its environment monitoring program, the delegation of inspectors of the provincial People's Council led by Mr Huynh Chi Thang - Vice chairman of the provincial People's Council met with the leadership of Bien Hoa city and talked about the environmental protection within the city on the morning of March 18. During its working visit, the delegation made a field trip to four places: the garbage treatment plant, Dong Xanh environmental joint-stock company (in Trang Dai ward), Hoa An market (in Hoa An commune), IDICO residential area (in Hoa An commune) and Bien Hoa market. At the present, three industrial parks within Dong Nai province - Bien Hoa 2, Amata and Loteco industrial parks - have built and put their centralized systems of waste water treatment into operation.
