U.S. trade deficit drops for first time in seven months

Trade had been expected to be a drag on first quarter growth The trade deficit in goods narrowed 10.3 percent to US$68 billion, according to the government’s advanced report released Thursday. This was the first narrowing of the deficit in seven months and came in well below the US$73.4 billion estimate of economists polled by MarketWatch. The government’s advanced report on wholesale inventories showed a 0.5 percent gain in March. And advanced retail inventories fell 0.4 percent. Imports fell 2.1 pct in March and the declines were widespread. Of the major categories, only auto imports rose in the month. Exports rose 2.4 pct during the month. The narrowing of the deficit in goods points to a smaller overall trade deficit in March. HCM City industrial production index drops
Viet Nam News HCM CITY -- The industrial production index of HCM City of the first four months rose merely 6.07 per cent compared with the 7.09 per cent of the same period of 2017, according to figures released at a meeting held yesterday to review the city’s socio-economic development. Speaking at the HCM City People’s Committee meeting, Nguyễn Huỳnh Trang, deputy director of the Department of Industry and Trade, said the figures indicated an “unsustainable and uncompetitive” growth of industrial production. She cited the number of medium- and small-sized enterprises, which account for 99 per cent of the total number of businesses in the city. The contributions of local and foreign-invested enterprises to the country’s economic growth are “unequal”, and the growth of industrial production is mainly based on foreign-direct invested (FDI) enterprises. More than 183 million shares were traded on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange at total value of over 5.7 trillion VND (250.8 million USD) on the day. In large-cap stock group, PetroVietnam Gas Joint Stock Corporation shares (GAS) and Vietinbank (CTG) hit the floor. The worst decliners in the VN30 basket included Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), which was down 5,000 VND per share. VN-Index drops 43.9 points due to selling pressure
Indications slumped in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchanges, with total transaction value reaching 8.22 trillion VND (362.2 million USD). The sharpest drop was seen in the prices of real estate, insurance and banking shares, falling 5.66 percent, 5.32 percent and 5.15 percent, respectively. Rubber shares also suffered from a fall of 3.17 percent, while retail shares were down 3.19 percent. A total of 204 million shares worth over 7.29 trillion VND (321.3 million USD) were traded on the HOSE. Meanwhile, the VN30 fell 49.61 points to 1,066.09 points, with 75 million shares were sold for over 4 trillion VND (176.4 million USD).
