CNET tests the screens of the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3, and the iPhone wins overall with better light output and color accuracy. CNET's phone screen measurement setup involves a high-end spectroradiometer and industry-standard software. The two top dogs in the smartphone world right now are the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3. My doughty CNET colleagues have thoroughly reviewed and compared each one, but so far we hadn't actually sat down to measure the performance of their screens. Until now. I subjected the screens of multiple GS3 and iPhone 5 samples to a series of measurements using the same state-of-the-art gear and software I use to evaluate and calibrate TV screens. The phone screens are quite a bit smaller, but the process is very similar. While I found major differences between the two, and advantages and disadvantages to each, my tests indicated that in general the iPhone 5's screen is better than that of the Galaxy S3. I'll be more specific. The … [Read more...] about Screens test: Apple iPhone 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3

4G is fast approaching, and the first phones are sale now. We've put the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, HTC One XL and Huawei Ascend P1 LTE through their paces but which is worth your money? 4G promises faster connection to the Internet for high-speed Web browsing, music and video streaming, and uploading pictures and updates. The first 4G network is EE, formerly known as Everything Everywhere, created by the merger of Orange and T-Mobile. As well as the four phones mentioned above, EE will later this year offer the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, and a 4G version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Leaving aside the Lumias and the Note 2, we tested each of the four phones currently available on EE's 4G network ahead of the public launch, and we've also compared the fab four on their other merits. Read on to see which is our pick of the 4G flock. 4G performance As the first 4G phones, the most obvious thing to compare is their performance on 4G. If only it was as simple as … [Read more...] about Galaxy S3 LTE vs iPhone 5 vs HTC One XL in 4G face-off
Apple's next iPhone is official, and despite being the sixth iPhone model (technically), we know it's officially the iPhone 5. Over the last year, we've heard a ton of rumors about what it might deliver with LTE, a taller display, and a redesigned connector being the most likely tidbits. Fortunately, we now can put all that speculation to rest as Apple spilled the secrets. Taller, thinner, and a metal back As expected, the new iPhone is 18 percent thinner (0.30 inch vs. 0.37 inch thick) than the iPhone 4S. Apple says it's the thinnest handset around, but that's a race that changes often. That means it's also 20 percent lighter for a total of 3.95 ounces. The Retina Display expands from 3.5 inches (its size since the original iPhone) to 4 inches. The total resolution remains the same, though, at 326 pixels per inch. The total pixel count is 1,136x640, and we now have a 16:9 aspect ratio. To the user, that means a fifth row of icons on the home screen. That's pretty nice since … [Read more...] about Should you buy the iPhone 5?
The Apple iPhone 5 is finally real. While its specs are premium, the iPhone isn't the only worthwhile smartphone on the block. We compare it, spec to spec, to the top Android and Windows phones: the Samsung Galaxy S3, and Nokia Lumia 920. Keep in mind that since the Lumia 920 and iPhone 5 aren't yet available, we're limited to educated speculation, rather than to the side-by-side, in-the-flesh evaluation. We'll have to save that for later, when we have all three devices in-house. Until then, we offer up our winners so far for each major category. You don't have to agree with us, and we certainly reserve our right to change our minds when we see the phones in full, but going on the specs, here's how we feel. Apple iPhone 5 Samsung Galaxy 3 Nokia Lumia 920 Operating system iOS 6 Android 4.0 Windows Phone 8 Display 4-inch IPS LCD; 1,136x640 pixels, 326 ppi 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED; 1,280x720 pixels, 306 ppi 4.5-inch AMOLED; 1,280x768 pixels, 332 ppi Price … [Read more...] about iPhone 5 vs. Galaxy S3 vs. Lumia 920: By the numbers
The Coco Controller could be the most attractive and reasonably priced way of leaving your slippery-fingered smart phone gaming woes behind if its Kickstarter is a success. Created by Harvard drop-outs Connor Zwick and Colton Gyulay, the device aims to provide a console-based gaming experience for the price of a smart phone case. The controller is designed to fit the current iPhone 4 and 4S, the Samsung Galaxy S3, the latest iPod touch, and (they reckon) the upcoming iPhone 5, so for the time being it looks like a promising enterprise. I mean, it's not like any previous Harvard drop-outs have done anything spectacularly successful in the tech industry is it? Importantly, the Coco Controller avoids any annoying battery and circuitry issues by communicating and being powered via the audio jack, rather than Bluetooth. This will make it easier to use, more reliable, and hopefully save on weight. The smart phone slots into the plastic casing, which houses a multi-axis directional … [Read more...] about Coco Controller could be your new iPhone and S3 gaming pal
