Ho Chi Minh City children are exposed to life-threatening risks when they eat food and candy of doubtful origin in school canteens, which a doctor warns can cause strokes. City school canteens now sell food items favored by children at cheap prices, including popping candies, coconut jelly, spiced rice paper, soft drinks, iced colored syrup, and dried squids. The kids eat their favorite snacks, which can be bought at VND2,000-5,000 (9-24 US cents), without knowing where and how they were made or whether they meet food safety standards. A canteen staff member at a school revealed kids are currently crazy about stick-shaped dried squids spiced with chilli powder and sugar, and a kind of sour crushed popping candy made of sugar and dried fruit-like particles. ICT contest in HCMC honors practical ideas for smart city development
This year’s HCMC ICT Contest is themed ‘Journey to a Smart City’ and was launched in August 2019. HCM City International Music Festival opens

The opera is a production of the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) in collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Vietnam and Norway’s Transposition Programme. The opera, with a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, tells the love story of Prince Tamino and Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night. After Pamina is held in captivity under the high priest Sarastro, the Queen of the Night persuades Tamino to rescue his daughter. Blind student receives full scholarship to RMIT University Vietnam
A young Vietnamese girl has defied her visual impairment to win a valuable scholarship to one of Ho Chi Minh City’s top international universities. Nguyen Thanh Vinh received a scholarship worth nearly VND1 billion (US$43,000) for a three-year bachelor’s degree at District 7-based RMIT University Vietnam, where all subjects are taught in English with no assistants or translations. Vinh was born without sight in Ninh Thuan Province in south-central Vietnam, a mountainous area with no schools or opportunities for the disabled. Even though she has never seen her surroundings, Vinh’s love for life is infectious. Her passion, desire, and determination have allowed her to overcome everything the world has thrown her way in order to earn this year’s only scholarship awarded by the Australian university.
