Japan says to release contaminated Fukushima water into sea

April 13, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Japan plans to release into the sea more than 1 million tonnes of contaminated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear station, the government said on Tuesday, a decision that is likely to anger neighbours such as South Korea.

The move, more than a decade after the nuclear disaster, will deal another blow to the fishing industry in Fukushima, which has opposed such a step for years.

The work to release the water will begin in about two years, the government said, and the whole process is expected to take decades.

“On the premise of strict compliance with regulatory standards that have been established, we select oceanic release,” the government said in a statement after relevant ministers formalised the decision.

The water needs to be filtered again to remove harmful isotopes and will be diluted to meet international standards before any release.

The decision comes about three months ahead of the postponed Olympic Games to be hosted by Tokyo, with some events planned as close as 60 km (35 miles) from the wrecked plant.

The disposal of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, run by Tokyo Electric Power, has proved a thorny problem for Japan as it pursues a decades-long decommissioning project.

Quang Binh caves get surreally real under photographic light

Early last month, HCMC-based Trung joined a group on a two-day tour to explore the two caves that are part of the cave system in the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

The group took a car from the center of Son Trach C ommune to the 28 km milestone on the Ho Chi Minh West road, then trekked through the Phong Nha – Ke Bang forest.

The first destination in the journey, Nuoc Nut C ave, impressed Trung with stalagmites dripping down from the ceiling and growing from the cave floor.

Cave experts have said that based on geological survey results, Nuoc Nut Cave is up to 2.2 km long and about two million years old.

The cave is open to visitors from February to the end of August every year.

After exploring Nuoc Nut Cave, Trung’s group camped for one night near the cave entrance and continued trekking t o Va C ave the next day.

In the photo above are stalactites in Va C ave. The interiors of both caves have a special structure thanks to a water system that connects with the world famous Son Doong C ave, said to be the world’s biggest. The t otal length of Va C ave is 1.6 km.

The lights of headlamps add to the mysterious effect.

“ There is no light in the cave, so it was necessary to have a lot of light shining in to get clear, better-looking photo s ,” Trung said.

Inside Va Cave, the team used padlock belt s and pulley s to move pass the stalactite walls that are over 10 m high.

The exploration requires visitors to be in good physical shape and have basic rock – climbing skills.

Trung said everybody’s tiredness vanished on seeing Thap Non Lake with hundreds of stalactites looking like pink bamboo shoots, each about 2 m high.

Experts say that the stalactites here are rare and unique, not to be found anywhere else.

Scientists have not yet solved the mystery of the conical stalactites seen above. They grew from the lake and were not formed by water drops that drip down from the ceiling , as it typically happens.

At the end of the journey, Trung said the interiors of the Va and Nuoc Noi caves were scenes from paradise.

Quang Binh, a popular tourist attraction in central Vietnam, is often referred to as the “Kingdom of Caves” as it boasts many limestone caves.

Earthquake hits off Binh Thuan coast, no tsunamis warning

July 15, 2020 by vov.vn

The location of the earthquake was at 10,398 degrees north latitude, 108,295 degrees east longitude with a focal depth of approximately 10 km, according to the centre for Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning.

This comes after geological experts stated that the waters off Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, and Khanh Hoa provinces have all been listed as part of the highest danger zone for earthquakes due to their position on the meridian fault lines 109-110.

Earthquakes occurring on these meridian fault lines are not considered strong enough to cause a tsunami, according to experts. However, if an earthquake is accompanied alongside a volcanic eruption, then it is possible that a tsunami of low intensity may occur.

Most notably, August 25, 2011, saw several earthquakes of 5.1 Richter magnitude occurring on the meridian fault lines 109-110.

Hanoi special sweet dumplings for Han Thuc Festival

April 12, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The ready-made ingredients to make Han Thuc’s festival specialties has been plenty in both local and online markets for expats in Hanoi to buy and delight their children at home with a Vietnamese cooking lesson.

Hanoians often make two types of sweet dumplings – banh troi (floating dumplings) and banh chay ( sweet mung bean dumplings) – on the third day of the third month of the Lunar year, to worship their ancestors.

Making these eye-catching banh troi and banh chay can be a joyful moment for mothers and children. Photo: The Vietnamese sweet dumplings made by To Hung Giang.

Han Thuc Festival or the ‘Cold Food Festival’, falls on 14 April this year. Even though not many people are knowledgeable about the festival’s origin, it’s still considered important among all the Vietnamese rituals.

As special dishes made exclusively for Han Thuc festival, banh troi and banh chay as well as their ingredients are sold at every market throughout the country in the days leading up to and during the festivals. Expats in Hanoi can buy the ready-made ingredients and delight their children at home with a Vietnamese cooking lesson.

In these modern days, savvy working housewives don’t have time for the time-consuming task, so they prefer to buy banh troi and banh chay at food stalls in the market. But like many things, the best are home-made.

Banh troi are small white dumplings made from glutinous rice flour stuffed with brown sugar. The most important stage of making banh troi is the shaping. Cooks pinch a little dough and flatten it out, place a brown sugar ball in the middle and roll it into a smaller ball of about three centimeters in diameter.

The cook heats the water to the boiling point, then cools it down a little bit before dropping some rice balls in, then boils again. When the balls float to the surface of the pot, they’re taken out with a ladle and then immediately placed into a bowl of cold water to prevent them from being overly sticky or gluing together.

The final step is the presentation. The white glutinous balls are put onto a plate and sprinkled with roasted white or black sesame seeds. Once made, they should be eaten that same day.

Banh chay are also made from glutinous flour, but they resemble boiled dumplings and are filled with mung bean paste, sprinkled with sesame seeds, and served in bowls with syrup flavored with grapefruit blossoms.

Traditionally, the banh troi and banh chay are white with a sugary taste, but talented cooks can make them more colourful and tasty by adding food colouring or flavouring to the dough.

In the present days, housewives do not need to prepare all ingredients for making these cakes by themselves but ordering from online stores on social media such as Facebook and Zalo or online shopping platforms like Shoppee, Lazada or buying from local markets.

These dough sets include all ready-made ingredients such as sticky-rice flour, natural brown sugar, green bean paste, sesame seeds, grated coconut, among others, at prices ranging from VND65,000 ($3) to VND100,000 ($4.5) per set.

A dough set at the price of $3 comprises one kilogram of ready-made glutinous rice flour (in five different colours) with corresponding amounts of sugar and roasted sesame.

A more expensive set, at $4.5, includes one kilogram of glutinous rice flour with corresponding amounts of sugar and roasted sesame for making banh troi and green bean paste and fresh sliced coconut for making banh chay .

Besides, the ready-made sweets are also available for busy housewives. The prices for ready-to-eat sweets range from VND10,000 to VND50,000 (from US$0.4 to $2.1) per portion, could also be ordered online or bought in the local markets.

For adventurous housewife who want to experience some new ‘different’ tastes, the floating dumplings with salted eggs or chocolate fillings are also available at the price of VND100,000 ($4.5) for a portion. Additionally, the floating dumplings in non-traditional shapes like rabbit, cat, fish are also the highlights of this year’s Han thuc Festival.

HCMC – Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds uprooted a tree on Nguyen Cong Tru Street, District 1, HCMC, injuring two commuters this afternoon, April 12.

The uprooted tree measures some 50 centimeters in diameter and over 20 meters in height. The victims were Pham Hoang Phu, a 36-year-old Grab motorcycle driver, and a 40-year-old rider. Phu suffered from slight injuries, while the woman suffered from a serious leg injury and has been hospitalized. The motorbike is seriously damaged.

“When we were some 50 meters from our destination, the tree suddenly fell onto my motorbike. My legs were stuck between the tree and the motorbike. Many people around came to help me,” the driver said.

Several hundreds of meters from this location, heavy rainfall uprooted another tree but caused no injuries. In District 7, another uprooted tree damaged a car.

Earlier this month, some 14 tons of fish were found dead in the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal after unseasonal rain hit the city. Many eateries and restaurants along the canal had to suspend their operations due to the unpleasant smell, while the residents there were forced to keep their doors shut.

Vo Thi Mong Thu, head of the HCMC Sub-Department of Fisheries, said after the downpour, garbage and polluted water from the sewers washed into the canal and covered the surface, reducing the oxygen content in the water. This was one of the reasons for the mass fish deaths, she said.
