However, the region has yet to take full advantage of its potential to develop a local tourism signature, particularly in terms of combining tourism services with agricultural produce. Most tourists to the Mekong Delta are in awe of the vast rice fields, orchards, and traditional agricultural and fishing villages. Tourists enjoy sightseeing as well as more hands-on experiences with agricultural activities. The Mekong Delta has promoted agricultural tourism products, including those that let you experience an hour of farming, or even a day in the life of a farmer. Community-based tourism models have helped promote local agricultural products while increasing incomes for farmers. Nguyễn Văn Phúc of Đồng Tháp Province’s Tháp Mười District said he planted IR 50404 rice this time and got a yield of seven tonnes per hectare, higher than last year. Besides, costs were lower than previous years because rice fields had plenty of sediments deposited meaning farmers could use less fertilisers, he said. Besides depositing the sediments, this also helped destroy disease-causing pests. More than 197,000ha were planted in the province, 60 per cent of them with high-quality rice varieties, according to its Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
