The Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS)'s branch in HCM City is holding a grand requiem for local deceased victims of Covid-19. The three-day event started at Vietnam Quoc Tu Pagoda this morning, August 18. The ceremony saw the participation of Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, the Acting Supreme Patriarch of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. Most Venerable Thich Le Trang, head of the Executive Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha in HCM City, said that it has been a year since HCM City was hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Myanmar sees highest single-day rainfalls in over 50 years

Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, saw its highest single-day rainfall in 54 years, 170mm, on August 17, compared to the previous record of 149mm in August 2019, inundating some areas in this city. Kyaukphyu, a major town in Rakhine state, experienced a rainfall of 502mm on the day, the highest in 58 years, compared to the 272mm reported in August 1994. PetroVietnam proposes 19-billion-USD petrochemical complex, oil storage project

The complex comprises two parts – a petrochemical and refinery plant project and a project to build a national storage for crude oil and petrol products. In the first phase, the petrochemical and refinery plant will have a capacity of processing 12-13 million tonnes of crude oil per year, along with 0.66 million tonnes of condensate, LPG and Ethane. The output of the plant will be 7-9 million tonnes of petroleum and 2-3 million tonnes of petrochemicals each year. Vietnamese cultural village to be built in RoK
Briefing on a plan for the construction of the village, Park asked the Embassy of Vietnam in the RoK for support to the project which aims to mark the 30th anniversary of the bilateral diplomatic ties (December 22, 1992 – 2022), to expand people-to-people exchange, and to promote Vietnam’s cultural experience in the RoK. According to Park, the village will be developed on a ground of 38,350 sq.m. It is expected to attract around 100,000 visitors and generate some 3.7 billion won (2.8 million USD) in revenue annually. Local authorities also hope that project will create jobs for nearly half a million of local residents. The Vietnamese village in Bonghwa forms part of a project planned to step up cultural exchange and accelerate cooperation between Bonghwa and Vietnam in tourism, culture and education.
