Nowadays, as the smallest ethnic minority in Nghe An, the Dan Lai reside solely in the mountains bordering Laos.

Once upon a time, it is said, after a local committed a terrible crime, the king penalized the village, forcing its inhabitants to seek refuge in the dense forest where they slept upright to evade danger.

Leaving the village, An crossed the Pha Lai suspension bridge. Late in the afternoon, he caught a group of locals crossing the bridge on their way home after a day working in the nearby rice fields.

Located on the Ho Chi Minh trail near the border with Laos, the Thanh Chuong tea hills in Nghe An, 330 kilometers south of Hanoi, has an unusual setting.

More than 50 years ago, a dam was built here to irrigate more than 700 hectares of rice fields in Thanh An and Thanh Thinh communes of Thanh Chuong District. Three years ago, local farmers began growing green tea. Now there are nearly 200 households growing tea across more than 400 hectares.

Tea estates in Moc Chau, Thai Nguyen and Da Lat can be visited on foot, but those in the Thanh Chuong hills are only accessible by boat.

How to get to Vietnam?

March 1, 2021 by vietnamlife.tuoitrenews.vn

The most common way for international tourists to get to Vietnam is by plane.

The country currently has 22 conveniently-located airports, 11 of which offer international services.

The three main gateways are Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang International Airport in Da Nang — located in northern, southern, and central Vietnam, respectively.

The other eight international airports include Van Don in Quang Ninh Province, Cat Bi in Hai Phong City, Vinh in Nghe An Province, Phu Bai in Thua Thien-Hue Province, Cam Ranh in Khanh Hoa Province, Phu Quoc on Phu Quoc Island off Kien Giang Province, Lien Khuong in Lam Dong Province, and Can Tho in Can Tho City.

Most Asian countries have direct flights to and from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Travelers can also fly directly into Da Nang from destinations around the region, according to the VNAT.

Travelers from neighboring countries, including China, Laos, and Cambodia, can also enter Vietnam by train or bus. However, they are required to prepare their visa beforehand, as there are no visas on arrival at land crossings within Vietnam.

In addition, a boat trip from Cambodia through the Mekong Delta makes for a scenic entry into southern Vietnam.

Visitors can book such a trip from tour agencies in Phnom Penh and Vietnam.

No matter by which way visitors arrive in Vietnam, they are assured of a unique and unforgettable experience.

Hanoi – The central city of Da Nang is set to be part of the global supply chain network and a gateway on the East-West Economic Corridor by 2030, a meeting in Hanoi on March 1 heard.

Discussing adjustments to the city’s master planning by 2030 with a vision towards 2045, the meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

By 2030, the city is also expected to become a destination for global lifestyles, a centre of tourism and services, and a maritime economic hub in Vietnam and the region at large. In the long term, it eyes becoming a special urban area and an international city.

Its population is predicted to stand at about 1.79 million by 2030 and its urban area is to cover 31,836 ha, or more than 32 percent of the local land area.

The municipal People’s Committee signed a contract with a joint venture between Sakae Corporate Advisory Ltd. and Surbana Jurong (Singapore) on the project adjusting the master planning.

During the process of building the project, the municipal People’s Committee organised three international workshops and collected feedback from local residents, businesses, departments, and agencies.

In an assessment, the Ministry of Construction said the project identified the position and role of Da Nang as a core urban area of the Hue-Da Nang-Chu Lai-Ky Ha-Dung Quat (Van Tuong)-Quy Nhon urban area chain, forming the Da Nang urban region, encompassing Chan May (Lang Co), Da Nang, Dien Ban, Hoi An, and Nam Hoi An.

In his remarks, PM Phuc lauded Da Nang’s coordination with ministries and agencies as well as its response to opinions from local residents and socio-economic organisations in the planning work.

Da Nang should develop beyond its current status as a first-tier urban area, he said, becoming a special city.

Given that it boasts one of the most beautiful beaches in the region, he urged the city to pay more attention to waste water treatment and climate change issues and suggested it seek new development drivers apart from tourism.

Corruption and other misdeeds in planning adjustment and implementation must be prevented, he reminded all in attendance, noting that planning and realisation must be in tandem.

Former hunters use their skills to protect the forest

GIA LAI — Looking at the herd of deer being protected in Kon Ka Kinh National Park, Gia Lai Province, Djưng feels very happy.

Djưng from the Ba Na ethnic group in Đê Kjiêng Village, Ayun Commune, Mang Yang District, is now a ranger in the forest that he used to hunt in for a living for many years.

He was one of the best hunters in the village, which is located nearly 100km from Pleiku City.

Djưng said, in the past, it was not easy to travel from the village to the centre of the district, so local kids like him only went to the forest to catch birds and pick mushrooms.

As a kid who grew up hunting, he hunted with his brothers and uncles to catch gaurs, deer and wild boars.

That is why he knows every stream and every corner of the forest.

“I know the animal’s behaviour. I know when they go to stream to drink water, go for food and where they like to sleep. So it is not difficult to set traps to catch them,” Djưng told Tiền Phong (Vanguard) newspaper.

“If I caught a small animal like a rabbit, I brought it home to cook for my family. The big ones could be sold to buy rice.”

Now he has turned over a new leaf as he uses his hunting skills to protect animals and forest.

A few years ago, an animal expert came to Kon Ka Kinh National Park looking for gray-shanked douc langurs for an endangered species protection project.

At that time, Djưng became a tour guide to help him during his research in the forest.

Djưng said he knows how long the animal had been in the forest and where they sleep from the smell of the animal’s urine and faeces.

He helped the expert conduct valuable researche on gray-shanked douc langurs in Kon Ka Kinh National Park.

“The days in the forest with the expert were also the days I understood the value of the forest and animals thanks to his explanation,” said Djưng.

“After that, he invited me to Đà Nẵng to help him build a research and protective area for this species. The forest awakened my heart. But at that time I couldn’t give up hunting because I couldn’t find another job.”

In 2019, Djưng and Chưn, Djưng’s friend and another famous hunter in the village, were hired by the Centre for Environmental Education and Forest Environmental Services of Kon Ka Kinh National Park.

They were both assigned to serve ecotourism activities and find beautiful landscapes to help centre open new tours. They also share survival skills in the forest with tourists.

Talking about his friend, Djưng said Chưn was a hunter but also a logger at that time.

To make a living, Chưn hunted animals and illegally cut down trees for sale.

“Once I saw young birds dead in a nest because their mother was shot or a pregnant deer thta had been killed. I loved them but I had to kill them and cut down trees for my family’s livelihood,” Chưn said.

According to A Mưm, another local hunter, for many generations, the lives of the local people have depended on the forest.

He inherited hunting skills when he was a child, so he used those skills to earn a living.

Trần Văn Thụ, director of the Centre for Rescue – Biological Conservation and Development in Kon Ka Kinh National Park, said in previous years, the centre’s officers had to work hard to find traps set by local hunters in the forest.

“Following hunters’ footprints, we can found dead animals and chopped down trees,” Thụ said.

But now, the local hunters’ awareness about the forest has changed.

A Mưn works for the Centre for Rescue – Biological Conservation and Development and uses his hunting skills to remove thousands of traps in Kon Ka Kinh forest to protect animals.

“Rescuing the trapped animals awakened me, helping me have a meaningful life,” A Mưn said.

Djưng and Chưn also help remove animal traps in the forest with A Mưn.

“Nobody wants to catch and kill animals. All of this is for a living. Now we are trying to explain and tell other people to stop hunting to protect the forest,” Djưng said. — VNS

HÀ NỘI — Đà Nẵng plans to become a tourism and sea-based economic hub of Việt Nam by 2030 following its adjusted master plan with a vision to 2045.

Under the plan, the central city is projected to become a part of the global supply chain network and a gateway to the East-West Economic Corridor, leaders of Đà Nẵng reported at a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc in Hà Nội on Monday.

The city also hopes to become a special urban area in its long-term vision of becoming an international city. Its population by 2030 is expected to reach 1.79 million and the urban construction area will be about 31,800ha, accounting for more than 32 per cent of its mainland area.

PM Phúc applauded Đà Nẵng authorities’ efforts to work closely with ministries, agencies and to collect public opinions into making the master plan.

The city should aim to become a special city of Việt Nam to bring Đà Nẵng to a higher level in terms of both quality and development scale, the PM said.

The Government leader approved the plan to develop Đà Nẵng into a spearhead tourism city, a sea-based economic centre of Việt Nam, a gateway to the East-West Economic Corridor and a worth-living and safe city.

Regarding waste treatment, PM Phúc said this was an important issue for Đà Nẵng – a city with one of the most beautiful beaches in the region. The city should also have measures to deal with climate change.

He also asked for measures to prevent corruption in adjusting and implementing the master plan and have a proper supervision mechanism. — VNS
