Police in Cau Giay District in Hanoi on Friday announced the conclusion of an investigation into the death of a first-grader who was locked inside a school bus for nine hours in early August, with prosecution proposed for three suspects. The police suggested the district People’s Procuracy launch prosecution against Nguyen Bich Quy, 55, and Doan Quy Phien, 53, for committing “involuntary manslaughter” and Nguyen Thi Thuy, 29, for “neglecting responsibility, causing serious consequences." The result of the police investigation shows that Quy and Phien, who were the supervisor and driver, respectively, of a school bus contracted by the Gateway School in Cau Giay District to transport its students, started picking up 13 Gateway students on a 16-seater van at 6:00 am on August 6. Smuggling up as New Year approaches
Smuggled cigarettes in Binh Phuoc province are destroyed (Photo: sggp.org.vn) HCM City (VNS/VNA) - Prevention of smuggling of goods across the country’s borders is becoming more difficult as the New Year season approaches, according to border authorities. Three districts in Binh Phuoc province (Bu Gia Map, Bu Dop and Loc Ninh) which border Cambodia have seen an increase in smuggled goods. For the first nine months of the year, authorities detected 2,659 smuggling cases. Smuggled goods were mostly cigarettes, sugar and clothing. The amount of issued fines and back taxes totalled over 37 billion VND (1.6 million USD). The smuggling cases are usually carried out by small groups of individuals in a number of ways that have become more sophisticated. International Food Festival to kick off in Hanoi

The International Food Festival is an annual cultural and charity fundraising event hosted by the Service Department for Diplomatic Corps, featuring around 120 pavilions representing embassies, foreign relations departments, non-governmental organisations and foreign cultural centres in Vietnam. The event is sponsored by Ambassador Nguyen Nguyet Nga, spouse of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh. Dong Nai leads new-style rural building program
The southern province of Dong Nai is among the localities leading the national program on new-style rural area building with 52 out of 136 selected communes satisfying all the 19 criteria so far, said Vo Van Chanh, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee. Notably, the 2014 per capita income reached 37.6 million VND (1,790 USD) and 38.6 million VND (1,830 USD) in Xuan Loc district and Long Khanh town, respectively, making them recognized as district-level new style rural areas, Chanh said. Last year, as many as 785 communes were estimated to become new-style rural areas.
