Taiwan prepares white rhino ‘Emma’ to find mate in Japan

March 4, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Emma, five years old, slim build with a gentle demeanour, is looking for love overseas. Hobbies include hanging with friends and studying Japanese. Seeks fellow rhino for companionship and mating.

It’s been a busy and exciting time at Taiwan’s Leofoo Safari Park where zookeepers have been preparing to send one of their southern white rhinos over to Japan.

Part of an attempt to widen the gene pool of Asia’s captive-bred white rhinos, it is the first time Taiwan will send a rhino overseas to breed.

The safari park scoured their 23 strong herd to find a suitable candidate and settled on “Emma” who ticked all the right boxes.

“Emma was chosen because of her mild personality… and her smaller size also makes it easier to ship overseas,” Sean Wu, the park’s chief veterinarian and animal manager, told AFP .

“She seldom get into fights with other rhinos or snatch other’s food.”

Visa and paperwork depending, Emma will soon travel to Japan’s Tobu Zoo in Saitama where a 10-year-old fellow rhino “Moran” has been lined up to be her first suitor.

To help her adapt to her future new home, zookeepers have started using Japanese instructions for commands such as “come” and “no”.

“We have added Japanese commands in our daily animal training so that slowly when she (Emma) arrives in Japan she can more quickly adjust to the new language,” Wu added.

The rhino has also been trained to get used to “outdoor ambient sounds” such as aeroplane engines and trucks to prepare her for any noise during the upcoming journey.

Her trip originally set for this month has been postponed to late April at the earliest due to Japan’s border restrictions imposed over the COVID-19 pandemic, the park said.

A vet and a zookeeper will fly from Taiwan two weeks ahead of her departure to undergo quarantine. They will stay in Japan for at least a week to ensure Emma adjusts to the new environment.

They were nearly wiped out in last century but managed to recover thanks to conservation efforts.

Their northern cousins were not so lucky. Only two remain, both female, rendering the species functionally extinct.

Other rhino species such as the Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino have less than 100 herds left.

Zoo breeding programmes played a crucial role in repopulating southern white rhino herds.

Leofoo Safari Park imported eight rhinos from Africa in 1979 and now has the most successful breeding programme in Asia with 23 animals in its herd.

Rhino poaching is fuelled by a market for their horns in Asia — especially China and Vietnam.

Horns are made of nothing more than keratin, the same material as fingernails and hair. But scammers erroneously market horns as an aphrodisiac or cancer cure.

PM hints at dissolution and bankruptcy for loss-making mega projects

March 4, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – The main goal is to minimize losses for the state budget and ensure lawful rights for workers, national security and defense, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has said.

Inefficient projects must be dissolved or filed for bankruptcy in compliance with current legislation to retrieve state capital as much as possible.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc stressed the view at a government meeting discussing 12 ineffective and stagnant projects in the industry and trade sector on March 3.

At present, three projects have been taken out of the monitoring list of poor-performing ones, including the DAP1 Hai Phong Fertilizer Plant, Ethanol Binh Phuoc and Ethanol Phu Tho, for  becoming profitable.

A report from the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) informed other projects are in operation but face large amount of accumulated losses, some  are underway or being put on hold.

One of the major obstacles preventing the state from withdrawing its capital in these projects is the ongoing legal disputes regarding the value of Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts for five projects.

As these loss-making projects are putting huge burden on the state budget, PM Phuc urged government agencies to take drastic measures to resolve the issue, asking the MoIT to submit a solution for the Phuong Nam Pulp Factory before March 10.

While the government stands firm on its stance of not pumping additional capital into those ineffective projects, Phuc requested the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises (CMSC) to propose detailed solutions for the government to consider.

“The main goal is to minimize losses for the state budget and the economy in overall, at the same time ensuring lawful rights for workers, national security and defense,” Phuc said.

As of last October, total accumulated losses of 12 projects had reached VND26.3 trillion (US$1.14 billion).

The 12 loss-making projects include four in fertilizer production, three in biofuel production, two in steel manufacturing, one in polyester production, one in pulp and one in shipbuilding.

KMS Solutions, a subsidiary of US engineering and software services company KMS Technology, has launched an electronic know-your-customer (eKYC) platform targeting Southeast Asia’s banking sector.

It automates the verification, identification and extraction of data from images and documents.

Le Huu Tan Tai, digital banking solution director at KMS Solutions, said: “Banking needs to stand at the forefront of digital transformation as it directly impacts the economy at large. However, Southeast Asia, and Viet Nam in particular, still faces certain challenges when undertaking digital banking.

“Thanks to our experience in implementing digital banking for established banks across the world, KMS is well-positioned to support banks in the region with accelerating their digital transformation faster, more effectively and more securely.”

eKYC allows banks to reduce the time needed to verify customer’s information, which otherwise might take days to weeks using traditional methods.

Customers will no longer have to wait in long queues at counters because all the processes are done online.

The solution is researched and developed based on 4.0 technologies such as optical character recognition, face matching, liveness detection, and artificial intelligence.

Le Tran Bao Duy, general director of KMS Solutions, said, “As banks, financial institutions, e-wallets, and securities companies in Viet Nam are actively going digital, the prospects for eKYC solutions are huge.”

eKYC could support at least 35 per cent of the automation process at banks in Viet Nam by 2025, he added. — VNS
