Abandoned baby with cleft palate sent to social protection centre

March 24, 2021 by dtinews.vn

A four-month-old child in the southern province of Bac Lieu who was abandoned by his parents has been sent to the provincial social protection centre.

On November 10 last year, several hours after being born, Phuoc was sent to Bac Lieu General Hospital by a woman who said that she lived with the boy’s mother.

Phuoc is now staying at Bac Lieu Social Protection Centre

The boy was hospitalised because of a neonatal infection. Doctors asked the woman to provide the birth certificate. Since then, the woman has not returned to the hospital.

Doctor Nguyen Ich Tuan, deputy director of Bac Lieu General Hospital, said that Phuoc’s health has improved. On March 18, Bac Lieu Social Protection Centre officially received the baby.

Nguyen Thuy Nhu, deputy director of the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, asked the centre to take care of him. He hoped that the boy would be adopted.

To Hong Nguyen, director of the centre, said that the centre would assign staff to directly take care of him. The centre will also try to help treat the baby’s cleft palate.

April 4, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Four members of a family were killed after a fire broke out at their house, which they also used to run a baby store, in Hanoi early on Sunday morning.

The house, located at 311 Ton Duc Thang Street in Dong Da District, began catching fire at around 1:00 am, when the victims were sleeping.

Firefighting police officers arrived at the location shortly after being notified, but all four people inside the house were already dead.

The deceased victims include Nguyen Thac Thi, 80, Nguyen Anh Hong – Thi’s 40-year-old daughter, Dinh Hung Vy – Hong’s 38-year-old husband, and Dinh Ha Tue Man – Hong’s 10-year-old son.

The first body was brought out of the house at around 6:45 am the same day.

Preliminary information showed that the house covers an area of 60 square meters and has three floors together with only one entrance.

Man builds cemetery for stillborn babies

April 16, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

A man in Thua Thien-Hue province and benefactors not only buy coffins for the poor but has also built a ceremony for stillborn babies.

Man builds cemetery for stillborn babies

As director of a petroleum company with many business points of sale across the province, Nguyen Xuan Hiep, 42, in An Dong ward of Hue City, says his life “has never been enough”.

Nguyen Xuan Hiep is a well-known name to Hue’s people. ‘Hiep Bo Tat’ (Hiep Bodhisattva) is how they call him with respect. He uses social media to call for donations worth billions of dong a year to help poor people buy coffins and pay for burial expenses.

“Doing charity means helping people in difficult situations. This could be actions to support living people or to commemorate the deceased,” he said.

Only when he does both things well is this “enough” for Hiep. If he cannot do one of the two things, he feels “deprived”.

Three years ago, Hiep and his group of benefactors called Nhung tam long hao tam Facebook (Facebook Kind Hearts) heard that many stillborns, for various reasons, were not properly buried. He felt compassion for them and decided to build a home for them.

He spent over VND100 million and together with the benefactors in his group bought a 300 square meter land plot on Vo Van Kiet Road in An Tay Ward.

In mid-2018, the construction of Cemetery ‘Duong ve coi tinh’ (Road to eternity) on the land plot was completed and put into use at a total cost of VND700 million.

In use for the last three years, the cemetery has more than 500 graves, more than half of which were buried by Hiep and his friends themselves.

Hiep said he was relieved when he could fulfill his wish of building a cemetery and give them a ‘home’. However, he sometimes feels grief.

“I witnessed tens of stillborn babies being taken to the cemetery for burial. Most of them were carried by their relatives. But in many cases, adults left them in front of the cemetery and then left,” he said.

According to Hiep, of the 500 graves at the cemetery, about 200 are relatives of people in poor circumstances, or young, unmarried women experiencing misfortune.

Every time he receives them, Hiep and benefactors spend their own money on offerings and carefully bury them. They also clean the graves and organize worship according to local customs at the beginning and middle of every lunar month.

Temperatures to top 40 Celsius degrees as heatwave blankets Vietnam

April 1, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Scorching weather is forecast to affect regions across Vietnam on Thursday, with temperatures expected to top 40 degrees Celsius in some locales.

The highest temperature in northwestern provinces is anticipated to reach 34-37 degrees Celsius, according to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Average highs in northeastern localities, including Hanoi, are likely to reach 29-32 degrees Celsius.

The localities saw light fog early on Thursday morning but skies are likely to clear up by the afternoon.

The heat is expected to be more extreme in north-central Vietnam, where mercury is forecast to rise to 37 degrees Celsius.

In mountainous areas, mercury will average between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius, with some areas seeing temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius.

Average highs in localities between central Da Nang City and south-central Binh Thuan Province will be slightly lower, at 33-36 degrees Celsius.

In southern Vietnam, Thursday will be broiling, with temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius and unseasonal showers and thunderstorms possible in the evening hours.

Highs in the Central Highlands will be from 32 to 35 degrees Celsius.

The extreme heat combined with low humidity will bring high risks of fire and explosion, as well as forest fires, according to experts.

This phenomenon may also cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke in people who spend significant time outdoors.

It is highly recommended that children and the elderly spend daytime hours indoors.
