Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — The beauty of men and women who preserve traditional handicrafts is reflected in a photo exhibition launched yesterday in Hà Nội. With the theme “The Quintessence of Hà Nội’s Craft Villages and Trade Streets”, the exhibition showcases 80 authentic and lively photos featuring artisans’ portraits, working life and daily activities. The exhibition is divided into three main parts: Trade Streets, Traditional Handicraft and Cuisine Trade. It’s the 13th iteration of the "Hà Nội in Me" photo exhibition, launched annually by the Kinh Tế & Đô Thị (Economics & Urban) newspaper. Visiting 500-year-old pottery making village of Thanh Ha
Over the past five centuries, locals in the ancient pottery village of Thanh Ha have kept their traditional method of making pottery - hand made and wheel thrown. Thanh Ha pottery village is located on the banks of the Thu Bon River in the city of Hoi An, Quang Nam province Legend has it that in the beginning of the 16th century, artisans from Thanh Hoa province settled in Hoi An and established the village. The highlight of the event is a rural market showcasing cultural identities, traditional practices and handicrafts, and indigenous dishes of ethnic groups in the northern region, including Mong, Cong, Thai, Tay, Dao, and Kho Mu people. Visitors to the market can explore the craft of bamboo and rattan weaving, and dyeing techniques of Mong and Cong ethnic women in Dien Bien province. Meanwhile, Mong people will reveal their techniques of beeswax painting on fabric - a traditional craft which has been practiced in their community for generations. Hue festival honors traditional crafts
Photo for illustration: hanoitimes.com.vn According to Nguyen Van Thanh, Chairman of the Hue city People’s Committee and head of the organizing board, the opening ceremony on April 28 will include a special art program. The festival will feature a space for artisans and craft villages and exhibitions of art works and imperial artifacts. Other activities to be held within the festival include a food festival, an Ao dai (Vietnamese traditional long dress) festival, film screenings and a balloon festival. Some 54 traditional craft groups and villages across the country have registered to attend the festival, which will also see the participation of five cities and enterprises from China, Japan and the Republic of Korea. Fun excursion and workshop in Vạn Phúc silk village
Tourists participate in a silk collage workshop at Vụn Art. – Photo courtesy of Vụn Art HÀ NỘI — The Friends of Vietnam Heritage will host an excursion to the craft silk village Vạn Phúc in Hà Đông Disctrict on Saturday. The one-day trip, which take place from 8.30am until 4pm, will include two major activities – silk collage workshop and village tour. The morning will be spent at the Vụn Art for a talk and workshop. Vụn Art is a local social enterprise founded by inspirational Lê Việt Cường which aims to teach art and create meaningful much needed employment for the disadvantaged and disabled who live in and nearby the village. The enterprise uses the scraps of silk that have no use for silk collage-based craft. Tour membesr can make a silk collage picture.
