In Ha Long city, Nov. 30, Ha Long Shipbuilding Co. (under the Vietnam Shipping Industry Group- Vanishin) has handed over the container ship 1730 TEU named New Vision to Vinashin Ocean Shipping Company (under the Vietnam National Shipping Lines). To date, this is the largest container ship that was newly built and handed over to the Vietnamese ship owner. The New Vision is a container ship with capacity of 1730 TEU. It is 184.1m high and 25.3m wide with the main engine's power of 13.320Kw. The design of this ship was approved and directly supervised by GL registry agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. Cai Lan port in northeastern Quang Ninh province has just received a 40,462-ton container ship of Panama, the biggest of its kind that has arrived at the port to date. The MSC PEGY of 207 meters in length and 32.24 meters in width, belongs to the Mediterranean Shipping Company - the world's second largest shipping line in terms of container transport capacity. The Cai Lan International Container Port Co. Ltd has poured US$103 million into a project to upgrade and expand the deep-water Cai Lan port. The firm will build and operate three wharves No. 2, 3 and 4 at Cai Lan Port under the two-phase project which is scheduled for completion in 2014. One of the world's largest container ships, the CMA CGM Laperouse docked at the Cai Mep International Port Terminal (CMIT) in the northern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on Monday. The vessel belongs to CMA CGM, the world's third largest container shipping company, and has a capacity of 13,830 TEU and DWT of 157,092. With a length of 365.5 meters CMA CGM Laperouse is the largest container vessel to ever call on a Vietnamese port. CMIT was established on January 26, 2007 as a joint venture between Vietnam-based Saigon Port, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and APM Terminals BV. The French CMA CGM company intends to add more ships similar to Laperhouse on the Asian-European trade route. Earlier, CMA CGM Columba with a capacity of 11,500 TEU and 131,263 DWT had arrived at the newly opened Cai Mep International Port Terminal. The CMA CGM Laperouse moored in Cai Mep Port on Monday has become the largest container ship to call on a Vietnamese port. The French carrier CMA CGM will add more ships similar in size to the Laperhouse on the Asia-Europe trade lane, starting in March. The ship has 13,830 20-foot equivalent units of capacity. The Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), built through a joint venture between the Vietnam-based Saigon Port, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and APM Terminals, opened in March. A press release from CMA CGM quoted Jean-Charles Tassoni, general director of CMA CGM Vietnam, as saying that ultra large container ships of 14,000 TEU or larger are becoming the staple of the Asia-Europe trades.
