Travellers Notes (05-06-2009) Con Dao Island tour discounted HCM City-based Fiditour is offering a VND500,000 discount on three-day tours to Con Dao Island, which costs VND3,145,000 (US$175). The company has also announced that veterans joining the tour to Con Dao Island, where the notorious prisons of the French and the former Sai Gon regimes were located, will be offered discounts of VND600,000 each. Fiditour says there is much to see on the island, including the Con Dao Museum, the Phu Son Historical Site and Tiger Cages. Tourists will also be guided through the forests to better experience and understand local flora and fauna. I have long dreamed of taking a trip to the Con Dao Islands, a remote southern archipelago and notorious French prison of colonial times where famous Vietnamese freedom fighters were confined. At around midnight, my friend and I went on deck to look out into the darkness. Surrounding us was nothing but darkness and rolling salt water. It felt a bit confining and none to secure. The ship we were on was pretty big but it seemed to be more like a bamboo leaf bobbing about out on that vast open sea. Usually, people leave for Con Dao from the city of Vung Tau, 185 km southeast of the Con Dao Islands. And they usually buy a round-trip ticket. A ship departs at 5 pm and reaches Con Dao the following morning. Visitors generally stay one night and then take the same ship back to the mainland. More than 400 Buddhist monks and followers will participate in the Grand Requiem for martyrs at the Con Dao Prison on Con Dao Island on April 25. The requiem is jointly held by the People's Committee of the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, the Vietnamese Buddhism Association and the Vietnam Television. The requiem will start at 2pm, April 25, at Hang Duong cemetery and Wharf 914 on Con Dao Island. Besides the requiem, a special music programme entitled "Con Dao Legend" will take place at the Hang Duong cemetery at 8pm, April 25 and will be aired live on VTV2 and VTV4. The requiem and the music show will see the presence of Party, state and the government leaders, senior Buddhist monks, overseas Vietnamese and former prisoners of Con Dao Prison.
