Along with securing a gold medal, Vietnam’s weightlifter Pham Thi Hong Thanh set three new records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift in the women's 64kg event on May 21 during the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31). Thanh lifted a total of 230kg - 104kg in snatch, and 126kg in clean and jerk, 6kg and 2kg higher than the old records, respectively. Meanwhile, both her rivals from Indonesia and the Philippines had to stop at 120kg. Thanh said that this was not her best performance as she suffered injury during practice. Va-va-vovinam: Vietnam’s martial art flies on SEA Games return
This is vovinam, Vietnam's acrobatic martial art with roots dating back to the country's struggle for independence, and it is showing at the SEA Games for the first time since 2013. Proponents are trained to use not only their hands and legs to grapple a rival to the ground, but also fend off assailants armed with blades. Short for "Vo Viet Nam" (literally "Vietnamese Martial Arts") it was inspired by nationalists who sought an end to the country’s French colonial rule. Created in the 1930s, it borrows from elements of Chinese kung fu and other Asian styles but was crafted to suit the Vietnamese of the time. Young lifter Rahmat Erwin Abdullah of Indonesia won a gold medal and broke a Games record in the men's 73kg. The 21-year-old athlete succeeded with a 155kg lift in the snatch. This record is also a personal record for Erwin. His previous heaviest lift was a significantly lighter 145kg . Moving on to the clean and jerk class, Erwin almost immediately beat his competitors at the first opportunity, immediately lifting 180kg. This again surpassed the SEA Games record of 177kg. Second National Paragliding Club Championships 2022 starts
The second National Paragliding Club Championships 2022 opens on Ly Son Island off the coast of Quang Ngai Province on May 21. The competition comprises individual man and individual women categories and team classification. Each team is made up of a maximum of seven pilots. Pilots will take off from a point on Thoi Loi Mountain and land on the 500-square-meter area. The competition will run from May 21 to 22. Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Ngai Province Nguyen Tien Dung said that the event aims to enhance the strength training movement and contribute to the propaganda on national sovereignty over sea and islands among people as well as promote Ly Son’s tourism.
