In video footage circulating on social media, about 10 kindergartners were to take a nap at noon. When one boy refuses to go to sleep, a kindergarten teacher goes out and returns with a black plastic bag that she puts over the little boy’s head and beats his buttocks. After realizing that there’s a camera in the classroom, she takes the bag off and takes the boy outside. Tran Yen District officials said the incident happened Saturday at the Bong Sen Kindergarten in Bao Dap Commune. The kindergarten is a new one that opened May 5, they added. An initial investigation has revealed that the boy, over two years old, peed, cried and refused to take a nap. The teacher said she covered the boy’s head with a black plastic bag so he could "fall asleep more easily". The police have been asked to verify the incident for follow-up action against the teacher. … [Read more...] about Teacher covers child’s head with plastic bag for not napping

Acceleration urged for treatment of child malnutrition
UNICEF continues to gather global evidence on the rising levels of malnutrition among children. All forms of this disease are prevalent in Vietnam, where the estimate based on the 2019 annual nutrition surveillance revealed that 230,000 children under the age of five suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) annually. Malnutrition is listed as a disease in the World Health Organisation's (WHO) International Classification of Diseases, and it is preventable and treatable. Wasting, defined as low weight-for-height, is the most visible and lethal type of malnutrition. Severe wasting – when children are too thin for their height resulting in weakened immune systems – is the most immediate, visible, and life-threatening form of the disease. Worldwide, at least 13.6 million children under five suffer from severe wasting, resulting in one in every five deaths among this age group. Given the close links between SAM, growth stunting, and mortality, interventions aimed at the prevention … [Read more...] about Acceleration urged for treatment of child malnutrition

The Vietnamese government also has policies which help these marginalized groups gain access to health insurance and other social welfare programs. Currently, Vietnam is cooperating with other entities, such as the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the International Labor Organization (ILO) to … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s next steps in the fight to eradicate child labor
UNICEF calls upon Vietnam to address child undernutrition
It’s the time to accelerate ongoing efforts by including examinations and treatments of severe wasting children in the revision of law. UNICEF is calling for countries, including Vietnam to strengthen nutrition policies and include treatment for child wasting under health and long-term development funding schemes, to save the lives of roughly 230,000 children in the country per year. UNICEF’s global evidence shows the rising levels of malnutrition in children and all forms of this disease are prevalent in Vietnam, where around 230,000 under-5 children suffer from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) annually. The worrying prevalence of undernutrition among Vietnamese children calls for a new approach to bring about transformational nutrition outcomes.
