WASHINGTON — The United States said on Tuesday it suspected that Syrian government forces have carried out a fresh chemical attack and it threatened reprisals. The State Department said it was assessing indications that the regime used chemical weapons on Sunday during its offensive in Idlib, the most significant remaining holdout in Syria of jihadist rebels. "We are still gathering information on this incident, but we repeat our warning that if the Assad regime uses chemical weapons, the United States and our allies will respond quickly and appropriately," State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement. Russia and Turkey, the key ally of the rebels, in September reached an agreement that nominally protects Idlib amid fears for the safety of some three million people in the northwestern area. But Syria's former al-Qaeda affiliate, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has seized a large part of the province and adjoining areas, triggering a regime offensive that includes strikes … [Read more...] about US suspects Syria in new chemical attack, threatens reprisal
Syrian state TV said on Monday the United States was suspected of striking an air base hours after U.S. President Donald Trump warned of a “big price to pay” as aid groups said dozens of people were killed by poison gas in a rebel-held town. The United States denied attacking the Syrian base, and France also said it had not carried it out. “At this time, the Department of Defense is not conducting air strikes in Syria,” the Pentagon said in a statement. “However, we continue to closely watch the situation and support the ongoing diplomatic efforts to hold those who use chemical weapons, in Syria and otherwise, accountable.” When asked about the explosions, an Israeli spokeswoman declined to comment. Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s forces. Syrian state TV said there were casualties in what … [Read more...] about Syria says US suspected of attacking air base but Pentagon denies it.

(HO/AFP/SYRIA CIVIL DEFENCE) WHAT HAPPENED? Syria's White Helmets, who act as first responders in rebel-held areas of Syria, said the attack took place late on Saturday using "poisonous chlorine gas". "More than 500 cases - the majority of whom are women and children - were brought to local medical centres with symptoms indicative of exposure to a chemical agent," according to a joint statement issued by the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) and the White Helmets. Patients showed signs of "respiratory distress, central cyanosis, excessive oral foaming, corneal burns, and the emission of chlorine-like odour", it said. Medics had "observed bradycardia, wheezing and coarse bronchial sounds". The statement said civil defence volunteers had found 42 casualties dead in their homes … [Read more...] about Syria ‘chemical attack’: What we know
An image grab taken from a video released by the Syrian civil defence in Douma shows unidentified volunteers giving aid to children at a hospital following an alleged chemical attack on the rebel-held town. (HO/AFP/SYRIA CIVIL DEFENCE) An alleged chemical attack that left dozens dead in Syria's rebel-held town of Douma sparked international outrage on Sunday (Apr 8), with US President Donald Trump warning there would be a "big price to pay". As condemnation of Saturday's attack poured in, rebels began evacuating Douma, the last sliver they held of their one-time stronghold Eastern Ghouta, under a deal with Syria's regime. Trump's threat came exactly a year and a day after the US fired cruise missiles at a Syrian air base in retaliation for a deadly sarin gas attack in 2017. "Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria," Trump wrote on Twitter on Sunday, lashing out at Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Russia's Vladimir Putin, a key ally of the … [Read more...] about Trump warns of ‘big price’ after suspected Syria gas attack
