Seoul (VNA) – The third ASEAN - Korea Youth Summit is taking place in Seoul from August 9 to 12. The event, held by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the National Council of Youth Organisations of the Republic of Korea (RoK), is themed “ Carbon Neutrality and ASEAN-Korea Youth”. It gathers more than 100 young representatives of the RoK and 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) who attend both via videoconference and in person. No ideal waste treatment technology for Vietnam yet
Vo Tien Dung, vice director of Hanoi-based Halcom Vietnam, said his business has been cooperating with German, Finnish and Japanese companies for the last 23 years, but has yet to find the best technologies to deal with Vietnam’s waste problems. It is difficult to treat typically unsorted and highly humid waste in Vietnam. For example, trash in Europe has a humidity level of around 20%, while trash in Vietnam could have a humidity level of 60-70%, he added. Even the ongoing waste-to-energy plants in Hanoi and Can Tho would need more time so their effectiveness could be evaluated, Dung said. Treating unsorted trash without the same humidity conditions as in other countries would make it hard to meet efficiency and emission standards, he added. Exports to the Americas eye strong rebound
In the first seven months this year, Vietnam’s total export value to the American market approximated $77 billion, equal 22 per cent jump on-year, in which exports to the US market were a bright spot reaching $66.7 billion, up 23.7 per cent on-year. Earlier, accelerated export of Vietnamese products to this market was a hallmark in 2021 reaching $114 billion in total export value, showing a 27 per cent jump on-year. Vietnam also witnessed a big export surplus with this market reaching approximately $89 billion last year. Exports to the US surpassed $96 billion in 2021, more than $21 billion compared to 2020, placing the US in the pole position among Vietnam’s export markets with export value far exceeding that of other markets such as China, the EU, ASEAN, South Korea, and Japan. Local media consider such a change a “revolution” in the electricity and environment of the country. The MoIT said in a written report to the Government Standing Committee that of 14,120 MW of coal-fired thermal power, State corporations had invested in 8,420 MW.
