The National Assembly’s Standing Committee has announced resolutions on the establishment of Phu My township in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and Phuoc Cat town in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong. (Photo: VNA) According to the Resolution No. 492/NQ-UBTVQH14, dated April 12, 2018, the district-level township of Phu My was founded, replacing Tan Thanh district. It covers an area of 333.84 sqkm and has a population of over 175,800 people. The new township borders Ho Chi Minh City to the west, Ba Ria and Vung Tau cities to the south and Dong Nai province to the north. It includes five wards of Hac Dinh, My Xuan, Phu My, Phuoc Hoa and Tan Phuoc, alongside five communes of Chau Pha, Song Xoai, Tan Hai, Tan Hoa and Toc Tien. The urgent meeting was held just several hours after an article in Thoi Nay, indicating that Toan Thinh Phat, the contractor for the project on Dong Nai riverside improvement and urban development, is filling the River with soil and rocks from a dioxin-contaminated area. The public reacted strongly to the news. Dong Nai tracks down suspected dioxin-contaminated soil use Quang Chung By Quang Chung - The Saigon Times Daily HCMC – Relevant agencies of Dong Nai Province called an emergency meeting last week to look into allegations that Toan Thinh Phat Corporation had used dioxin-contaminated soil for its urban rehabilitation and development project by the Dong Nai River as reported by a local newspaper. The project of Toan Thinh Phat has been temporarily suspended due to its controversial reclamation. But in an article published last Thursday, Thoi Nay under Nhan Dan newspaper reported that some soil suspected of being contaminated with dioxin at Bien Hoa airport had been allegedly used by the corporation for land reclamation.
