At the reburial ceremony (Photo: VNA) Gia Lai (VNA) - The Central Highlands province of Gia Lai held a ceremony at the martyrs’ cemetery in Duc Co district on May 24 to rebury the remains of 18 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who laid down their lives in Cambodia. At the ceremony, Nguyen Thi Thanh Lich, Vice Chairwoman of the provincial People’s Committee, stated their sacrifice is always remembered by Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities and people. Their remains were brought to Gia Lai on May 16, with a requiem held for the fallen soldiers and experts taking place on May 23. Vietnam, Cambodia to strengthen defense cooperation
The agreement was reached during the meeting between Defense Minister General Phan Van Giang and his Cambodian counterpart General Tea Banh at the headquarters of the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense (MND) on May 23. At the reception for General Tea Banh, who is also Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, the Vietnamese defense chief expressed his delight at the success of the first Vietnam - Cambodia border defense friendship exchange, confirming that it importantly contributed to promoting the solidarity and friendship between the two countries. Vietnam to help Cambodia organize e-sports events at next SEA Games
The partnership is under a cooperation agreement inked by the two sides in Hanoi on May 23, following the success of e-sports events at SEA Games 31 in Vietnam. Vietnam pledges action to ensure a sustainable ocean economy
Blue ocean scenarios The International Conference on Sustainable Ocean Economy and Climate Change Adaptation, which took place on May 12 and 13, was organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Sessions focused on five main topics: Reviving the blue ocean economy after COVID-19; building coastal cities with infrastructures adapted to the effects of climate change; combatting marine pollution and ocean plastic waste; promoting climate security, gender equality and resilience of vulnerable communities; and financing responses to climate and ocean needs. Revenues were VND2.28 quadrillion and spending was VND2.53 trillion, resulting in a VND216.4 trillion ($9.3 billion) deficit, or around 3.44 percent of GDP. The deficit was sharply up from VND161.5 trillion the previous year, but was below the cap of VND368.3 trillion set by lawmakers. State Auditor General Tran Sy Thanh said revenues fell short of estimates, especially accruals from land use fees, which were only 72 percent of the target, and income from state-owned companies, which was a mere 37 percent of the target, he added. Public debts rose by 6 percent to VND3.52 quadrillion (55.94 percent of GDP), or around VND35 million per capita.
