On April 18th, in Hanoi, the National Steering Committee on Bird Flu Control held a conference to review bird flu control activities over the past two years. Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung presided over the conference. According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Bui Ba Bong, Vietnam has experienced three outbreaks of bird flu since the occurrence in late December 2003, and a total of 45.8 million poultry have been culled or destroyed. The first outbreak of the epidemic in late 2003 reduced the country's GDP by 0.5 percent, an equivalent to more than 3,000 billion VND. Losses from culling and destroying infected poultry were valued at 1,300 billion VND. The next two outbreaks in late 2004 and early 2005 caused losses of 500 billion VND. VGP - Việt Nam's National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) and the US Henry Jackson Foundation Medical Research International (HJF Inc.) on November 12 launched a large scale research project on bird flu in Việt Nam. The aim of the research is to identify infection frequency in high-risk groups and dangerous agents, so as to establish strategies preventing bird flu in human beings. The project will be carried out until September 2010. NIHE and HJF Inc. signed the Agreement with their partners World Bank and Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences. Five Indonesians who had contracted bird flu virus have come under the United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) spotlight, local media has reported. The UN News Centre said on its January 31 statement that the WHO had confirmed the five Indonesian living in the west of Java, the most populous island in the Asian archipelago, had become the latest human fatalities from avian influenza. The statement issued by WHO said the five Indonesians - two men, two women and a nine-year old boy - had all succumbed in the past eight days since contracting the H5N1 virus. The UN health watchdog said 102 of the 124 confirmed bird flu cases in Indonesia have been fatal.
