Four Vietnamese business people have made it onto Forbes' list of the world's richest people this year. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao (L) and Pham Nhat Vuong. Pham Nhat Vuong Pham Nhat Vuong, owner of real estate conglomerate Vingroup and Vietnam's first billionaire, enjoyed his sixth consecutive appearance on the list, ranking as the world's 499th richest person this year. Vuong also retained his position as Vietnam's richest man with a net worth of $4.3 billion, a $1.9 billion increase from last year. Vuong's success in the property market spans 17 years since he moved back to Vietnam from the Ukraine where he produced and traded instant noodles. In January-August, Vietnam imported 1.64 million tons of plastic materials worth US$3.09 billion, up 7.5% year-on-year in volume and 29.8% in value respectively. Imported metals in the period amounted to 430,000 tons costing US$1.81 billion, up 1.9% in volume and 2.36% in value. For the garment sector, the figures were 401,000 tons of yarn worth US$1 billion, up 13.3% and 49.9% respectively. The import value of precious stones and metals almost touched the level, at over US$946 million, or a rise of 176% from the same period last year.
