An aerial view of the Mekong Delta (Illustrative photo: VNA) HCM City (VNA) – Over 890 projects in infrastructure with total investment of 221 trillion VND (9.43 billion USD) are being carried out by in the Mekong Delta by 898 businesses from Ho Chi Minh City, according to statistics of the municipal People’s Committee. The projects are mainly in building infrastructure for transport connection, industrial parks and residential areas; along with in other areas like agriculture, industry, river protection and waste treatment. HCM City has signed cooperation agreements with 13 Mekong Delta localities to help them fully tap investment resources and promote their advantages in the socio-economic development, said Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Tran Vinh Tuyen. The conference drew the attendance of ministries, agencies, localities, experts, and scientists to discuss and seek comprehensive solutions for the region. Following the conference, the Government issued Resolution 120/NQ-CP, dated November 17, 2017 (Resolution 120) on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in response to climate change. Carrying out Government's Resolution 120 / NQ-CP on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta to adapt climate change, the city has signed a comprehensive and bilateral cooperation agreement with 13 provinces and cities of the Mekong Delta. The city has focused on building transport infrastructure connections, investment in infrastructure and urban areas, industry and agriculture projects, river basins protection and waste treatment, transport of goods among enterprises, and tourism development, etc. Investment cooperation programs have achieved the rermarkable success, however, their results are still not commensurate with potentiality of the provinces and the city, even some programs have been approved but the implementation process has been sluggish. “The total land area lost in the last 10 years has reached over 3,000 hectares,” Tang Quoc Chinh from the Natural Calamities Control Department confirmed, adding that the landslides in the Mekong Delta are increasingly serious. Chinh attributed the serious landslides to the many hydropower reservoirs on the Mekong, from China to Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. On the mainstream of Mekong, there are 19 reservoirs, of which seven in China have been built and one is under construction. In Laos, two are now being built, and another two are going to be built. On the tributaries of the Mekong, a total of 142 reservoirs have been built, or are under construction, or planned. Hydropower reservoirs will increase landslides in the Mekong Delta. Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — The 15th International Travel Expo (ITE) will take place on September 5-7 in HCM City to boost the tourism industry in Mekong Delta region. Following the success of 14 previous editions, ITE has become an important tourism event for promoting national and regional tourism.
