Hanoi (VNA) – Despite the widely publicised lockdown now in effect in Phnom Penh and Takhmao city of Cambodia, hundreds of cars and motorbikes are attempting to cross the closed Chroy Changva Bridge – also known as the Cambodia n-Japanese Friendship Bridge – on April 15 morning.

Many people have tried to cross the bridge, claiming to have reasons that allow them to travel during the lockdown.

Police and authorities are currently attempting to process traffic and verify their claims.

Phnom Penh has been placed under a lockdown for the first time since the emergence of COVID-19 cases in the country at the end of last year. During the two-week period, non-essential travel will also be restricted.
According to an official announcement of the Cambodian government, the lockdown, starting from April 15, aims to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the community.

In Takeo province that borders Vietnam’s An Giang province, anyone who violates relevant regulations will be fined from 1-2 million riel (250-500 USD).

Meanwhile, residents in Svay Rieng province bordering Vietnam’s Tay Ninh province have been forced to wear face masks and put under social distancing following the detection of new community cases in the locality.

The Cambodian Ministry of Health announced that the country recorded 177 new COVID-19 infections and a fatality on April 14.

The country has to date logged 4,874 COVID-19 cases in total, including 36 deaths.

Meanwhile, seven districts in Kelantan, Malaysia will be placed under the movement control order (MCO) beginning April 16 after the number of COVID-19 cases in the state saw a spike.

Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the districts include Kota Baru, Pasir Mas, Pasir Puteh, Bachok, Machang, Tumpat, and Tanah Merah.

The MCO will come into force on April 16 until April 29, per the advice of the Malaysian Health Ministry following its risk assessment, he said in a statement.

The ministry confirmed an increase of approximately 30.5 percent in infections in the past 14 days, from 756 to 1,088 cases per day, with all seven districts classified as red zones.

Ismail added that nine new clusters have also been reported in the past fortnight, with a high infectivity rate.

Malaysia’s new COVID-19 cases climbed to 1,889 from 1,767 reported on April 13 — the highest number of new infections recorded since March 6./.

Thailand uses hotels beds for COVID-19 patients after surge in cases

April 16, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

Thailand reported on Friday its fifth record daily tally of coronavirus cases this week, as authorities set up thousands of field hospitals to cope with an influx of patients and lined up hotels to provide extra beds for those without symptoms.

All positive cases have to be admitted into care under Thai rules and with 10,461 patients currently being treated, the medical sector could be put under additional strain.

The government has set up over 20,000 beds at field hospitals across the country at community centres and gyms.

Hotels and hospitals are also partnering up to set up “hospitels” to treat asymptomatic patients, the health ministry said.

Currently 5,000 beds across 23 hotels had been readied, it said in a statement. About 2,000 beds are occupied and an additional 7,000 more could be added.

Hotels already hosting travellers to Thailand for quarantine were best positioned for this, Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, the president of the Thai Hotels Association, told Reuters .

“They have all the processes in place such as preventing cross contamination, wearing PPE suits, cleaning, making sure floors are not carpeted,” she said.

Hotels register through the health ministry and are matched up with hospitals that require extra beds.

The hotels range from three- to five-star facilities and are mostly in the outskirts of Bangkok, the epicentre of the latest outbreak, which saw 312 new infections on Friday.

Thailand has so far managed to contain the number of cases relative to other countries, but the new outbreak comes as many have travelled during the country’s Songkran new year holidays this week and as vaccination rates are still low.

Thailand reported 1,582 new coronavirus cases on Friday, marking the highest number of daily infections since the start of the pandemic.

The new cases took the total number of infections to 39,038, with deaths remaining at 97.

Authorities aim to get the new outbreak under control within a month, health minister Anutin Charnvirakul said, ahead of an announcement of a series of new measures later on Friday.

The measures being discussed include closing entertainment venues, clubs, bars, massage parlours and schools nationwide for at least two weeks, Anutin said on Thursday.

According to the guards at Long Binh Border Gate, they found the couple illegally crossing the border on April 13. The couple was quarantined immediately in Khanh An Commune. A quick test shows that both of them were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Their samples were later sent to An Giang General Hospital for a second test with the results also coming back positive. The samples have been sent to HCM City Pasteur Institute for confirmation.

The couple does not have the usual symptoms and are in stable health.

An Giang authorities proposed to transfer the couple to An Phu District Medical Station for quarantine and treatment, disinfect the vehicles, the border gate and the checkpoints.

Nguyen Thanh Binh, chairman of An Giang People’s Committee praised the border guards and locality authorities for their quick response. He then asked the health department to build a field hospital in Chau Thanh to avoid cross-infection at local hospitals.

The border guards were asked to strictly follow preventive measures and close the border gate after 6 pm.

An Giang authorities are investigating whether the couple had been in contact with anyone else.

On April 15, Vietnam reported 21 new Covid-19 cases including five in Ben Tre, two in An Giang, five in HCM City, one in Thai Nguyen, seven in Danang and one in Bac Ninh. All were quarantined on arrival.
