Vietnamese automaker VinFast is taking pre-orders for its first electric vehicle (EV) model VF e34 priced at VND690 million (US$30,000), the company announced on Wednesday.

People making orders before June 30, 2021 can purchase the EV for just VND590 million and get a free-of-charge battery lease for one year. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in November 2021. There have been a large number of people sharing their pre-order forms on social media platforms. Many voiced their support for the Vietnamese automaker’s environmentally-friendly initiative to introduce electric cars to Viet Nam, especially since air quality in large cities across the country has worsened in recent years.

Buyers can visit the website http://shop.vinfastauto.com or VinFast’s showrooms and merchants nationwide to make a refundable deposit, valued at VND10 million, for each pre-order. The deposit will be refunded if orders are cancelled.

VinFast is going ahead with its battery leasing plan which allows customers to rent out batteries separately from the EV. It is intended to reduce the initial cost of buying an EV for customers and let the automaker bear all the risks regarding the EV battery’s quality and lifespan.

The company has been working around the clock to build a network of about 40,000 charging stations across the nation by the end of this year.

VinFast, which is also producing electric motorbikes and buses this year, signed a contract to produce EV batteries with Taiwan’s ProLogium.

VinFast has just become the 57th automaker to receive a licence to test self-driving EVs in California, the US.

The launch of high-tech electric vehicles, including electric scooters, electric buses and personal electric cars, is part of VinFast’s pre-defined roadmap since entering the automotive market three years ago. — VNS

Ford says moving towards zero freshwater use in manufacturing

March 30, 2021 by bizhub.vn

US automaker Ford has said its long-term goal is to stop using freshwater in its manufacturing.

It has made considerable progress towards ensuring that the only freshwater used at its facilities is for human consumption, it said.

Two decades ago the company set out to reduce its water usage per vehicle by 72 per cent, and said that by 2013 it had saved more than 10 billion gallons.

Ford’s Global technology and business centre in Chennai in south India, opened in 2019, got a Platinum green building rating at launch, the highest possible certification for sustainable buildings.

The certificate not only factors in water conservation but also sustainable design, architecture, and building material resources, energy conservation including use of renewable energy resources, indoor environment quality, and innovation and development.

At Ford’s Chennai vehicle assembly and engine plant, freshwater consumption per vehicle is down to 1.17cu.m from 7.3 m3 a decade ago.

Having identified an alternate source of grey water to treat for use in non-production activities, the smart water efficiency processes see it recycle almost 100 per cent of industrial wastewater for use in manufacturing.

While there are no regulations or restrictions on water use at Ford’s Vietnam plant, which draws from the Thai Binh River, a membrane bio reactor-based sewage treatment plant is being installed there, which, when it becomes fully operational in June, will help recycle water.

“Some of our Ford production plants around the globe are in what could be considered water-stressed areas, which means it is our responsibility to act consciously to protect one of our most vital resources,” Caro Hosier, director of sustainability, environment and safety engineering for Ford international markets group, said.” — VNS

Vingroup may raise US$2 billion from VinFast’s IPO in US

April 13, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The US$2-billion IPO would make it the largest-ever listing by a Vietnamese company in the US.

Vingroup, Vietnam’s conglomerate, is considering a US initial public offering (IPO) of its automaker VinFast that could raise US$2 billion, according to Bloomberg.

The Vietnamese automaker is working with advisers on the potential offering that could take place as soon as the second quarter and raise up to US$3 billion.

A spokesman from Vingroup refused to confirm the information.

The company is seeking a valuation of at least US$50 billion after a listing, Bloomberg wrote.

The US$2-billion IPO would make it the largest-ever market capitalization by a Vietnamese company in the US. In 2018, Vinhomes, a subsidiary of the Vingroup, also launched an equity issue of US$1.4 billion.

Entering the auto industry three years ago, VinFast auto facility is manufacturing and assembling electric vehicles after receiving more than 3,000 orders during the first first 12 hours of sale.

VinFast targets to become a global smart electric car company and the US market is one of the first international markets that the company will focus on. Billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, Chairman of Vingroup, said that he would pour US$2 billion into VinFast to export cars to the US market.

Besides the launch of research and development centers in Australia, Germany and the US, the automaker plans to build an automobile factory in the US with the aim of selling electric cars in California next year.

The company is also planning sales in Canada and Europe in 2022.

The Vietnamese automaker sold nearly 30,000 vehicles last year. The company forecasts sales of more than 45,000 units in 2021.

VinFast, Foxconn discuss partnership for electric car production

March 20, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

The world’s largest contract manufacturer made a buyout bid to the subsidiary of Vietnam’s largest conglomerate, Vingroup, Reuters quoted two sources as saying.

But VinFast prefers a partnership since it is keen to brand itself as an eco-friendly automaker and wants to retain its electric vehicle business, one of the sources said.

In January, VinFast introduced three self-driving cars that are expected to hit the market later this year.

It tested autonomous vehicles in California in the U.S., one of the first foreign markets the company is eyeing.

Earlier this month it signed a memorandum of understanding with Taiwan’s ProLogium Technology Co. Ltd. for the production of batteries for electric cars.

VinFast plans to set up over 2,000 charging stations across the country this year to expand its electric vehicle ecosystem.

Vietnam’s first indigenous car manufacturer sold around 30,000 gasoline vehicles last year and expects sales of more than 45,000 this year.
