AB InBev Vietnam executives give away scholarships to children orphaned by COVID in Bình Dương Province’s Tan Uyen Town. — Photo courtesy of AB InBev Vietnam Binh Duong-based Belgian brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev Vietnam has given scholarships worth VNĐ10 million (US$438) each to 47 local children who have been orphaned by COVID-19. The scholarships, called ‘Let’s back to school’, were given last month in the province’s Tan Uyen and Ben Cat towns, with the children selected from a list provided by the Ben Cat Red Cross and Tan Uyen Youth Union. In the latest wave of the pandemic that began in April, many children have lost their parents and close relatives and face enormous challenges, especially those from poor families. Truong Van Toan, head of legal and corporate affairs at the company, said the orphans need support to overcome their trauma and stabilise their lives. Since 2010, Da Nang has identified information and communication technology as one of the three strategic breakthroughs in socio-economic development. The central city of Da Nang topped the Digital Transformation Index (DTI) rankings in 2020 for localities nationwide in all three key pillars of digital government, digital economy and digital society, according to the DTI 2020 Report released several days ago by the Ministry of Information and Communications. Residents in Ho Chi Minh City were allowed to experience a public bicycle rental service after one of its stations was put into operation on Saturday. The station, located on the sidewalk of Le Loi Street in District 1, is among the 43 stations that the municipal authorities have designated to operate the bike sharing service. Tri Nam Group JSC, developer of the rental system, is now making the final preparations at the remaining 42 stations before a pilot phase begins on December 10, said Do Ba Quan, the firm’s chairman. These stations, each covering 10-15 square meters, are situated on the sidewalks of multiple streets in District 1 and are close to local bus stops, parks, and popular tourist destinations. It is urgent for Vietnam to innovate growth model at the time of COVID-19 as it will help the country boost recovery after the pandemic crisis, one of the country’s major goals in short term prioritized by the Party and Government in 2022 and the 2022 – 2025 period. Vietnam’s growth model has revealed multiple weaknesses over the last decade, with the country’s labor productivity only equal to 62 percent of other countries in the same income group, and domestic sector outperformed by foreign-invested sector. In the past 10 years, total factor productivity and capital contributed 40 percent and 53 percent, respectively, to Vietnam’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP), while labor represented only 7 percent, development economist Dr. Dang Kim Son told the dialogue.
