Despite being one of the best carom players, this is the first SEA Games gold medal for Quyet Chien as this category is rarely held at the SEA Games. Vietnam won over Thailand 1- 0 in the match, freshly following which State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent their congratulations to the team. In its story, the Daily News said the final, held on Cam Pha Stadium of Quang Ninh province, was a game between equally talented teams, but Vietnam were in the lead thanks to a goal by Huynh Nhu at the 59th minute to grab the gold medal. Vietnam beat their Thai rivals 1-0 on Sunday night to win the gold medal in men’s football for the second time in a row at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games. Despite the rainy weather, fans arrived at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi very early to cheer for the junior Golden Stars. The Vietnamese under-23 team staged a series of attacks to pressure their Thai peers in the very first minutes of the match. Striker Nguyen Tien Linh had a chance to open the scoring for Vietnam in the 19th minute, but his header was not powerful enough to defeat Thai goalie Kawin Thamsatchanan. Vietnam has won 188 gold medals so far at the ongoing 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games, more than the total numbers of golds of second-placed Thailand, third-placed Indonesia, and fourth-placed Philippines combined. As of 3:00 pm on Sunday, the host nation had bagged 188 gold medals, 109 silvers, and 109 bronzes, according to the event's official website. Thailand ranked second with 77 golds, 92 silvers, and 125 bronzes. Indonesia and the Philippines were in third and fourth places with 62 and 47 gold medals, respectively. Vietnamese athletes claimed a total of 17 gold medals on Saturday, with the championship title in women’s football being the most notable.
